the background(which is what most people just change) is a .jpg file...not sure about the size but u can figure it out by finding one in your skins file. then just make a name for your .jpg and copy one of the skn files and rename it to the same as your own .jpg file.
as for changing things around a bit, open up a (copy of a)skn file with notepad and fool around with some settings. there are 4 sets of numbers for placement and size of just about everything on the screen....i 4get which do which, but there is 1 for horzontal placment, 1 for vertical placement, 1 for horizontal size, and 1 for vertical size(measured in pixels). you can even rename certain things on your display(for example when i made my skin for low resolutions i replaced strength with str and intellegence with int....just to save room)
it takes a while to get it right....but fool around with it a bit and youll figure it out in no time.
you are going to want to set your skin that your working on to a character. so when you change a value, you can log on that char and see what happened. i think it took me about 500 log ons to complete my skin...but i had to resize/rename just about everything. not to mention figuring it all out on my own.

hes where you change it open the .skn file with notepad and you should get this im only putting in the small part at the top coresponding to the background .jpg that i think where you having a problem
BackGround=anthrax.jpg <<is the .jpg for the backgound
PlacePicPosition0=33,8,24,33
PlacePicPosition1=33,8,56,33
PlacePicPosition2=33,8,88,33
PlacePicPosition3=33,8,120,33
PlacePicPosition4=33,8,152,33
PlacePicPosition5=33,8,184,33
PlacePicPosition6=33,8,216,33
PlacePicPosition7=33,8,248,33
PlacePicPosition8=33,8,280,33
so say you have saved your .jpg as MyNightmist.jpg
you have to edit the first line in the .skn file from
BackGround=anthrax.jpg
and change it to
BackGround=MyNightmist.jpg
which will set the picture for the background and then the text file for MyNightmist.skn will look like
BackGround=MyNightmist.jpg
PlacePicPosition0=33,8,24,33
PlacePicPosition1=33,8,56,33
PlacePicPosition2=33,8,88,33
PlacePicPosition3=33,8,120,33
PlacePicPosition4=33,8,152,33
PlacePicPosition5=33,8,184,33
PlacePicPosition6=33,8,216,33
PlacePicPosition7=33,8,248,33
PlacePicPosition8=33,8,280,33
then exit and save the changes
make sure you save the .skn file name as the same as your .jpg file it makes it eaier for doing it so in the
C:\Program Files\Nightmist\skins folder you will have
two files being
MyNightmist.jpg and MyNightmist.skn
so when you log onto nightmist if you go to game options
then skins your MyNightmist will appear in the installed skins then just highlight it then apply then restart nightmist for it to take effect
