Razzin's Spell Book

As you open the age-old dusty tome, a sheet of paper falls from it, disintegrating mid flight as it makes its way slowly to the ground... Ok, just trying to add some flavor to this post. Yeah, now that I am done that part, I think I can speak for everyone here, by saying that the Nightmist Mage is more a little bomb then the versatile spell weaver that we all wished it would be. So, in an effort to make him a bit more fun, I cracked open my mind (AD&D Books) and looked for some inspiration... Cantrip: Chiefly British. A deceptive move; a sham. Ok, so a cantrip is a cheap little spell designed merely to trick your foe or maybe help you/your allies out a bit. Well then, I guess from the term "cheap" we can all agree that a universal 1 mana per cast sounds good, right? Cantrips: Daze: Lowers targets hit/dodge rate. Sphere: As it is...but cheaper. Light: Can blind target, lowering their hit rate more so then daze without hindering their dodge... Arcane Slap(): Powers physical attacks with magic allowing them to negate armor. I can’t think of many more of these without blatantly ripping of D&D, so any ideas? Shock: Boy can we ever have fun with this spell...Aside from maybe dropping the mana cost to 2/3 to compete with Heal. Damage is alright though a little more wouldn’t hurt. -2/3 Mana -Level 1 Mirror: Creates another "copy" of you on the square. Looks exactly like you and appears to attack as well, follows you. It has 1/4 your HP. -10 Mana -This is mainly to confuse the enemy, make them guess which one is you. -Level 5 Magic Missile: (Name would need changing) You launch a volley of magic attack, unerringly. -5 Mana -Basically just a new attack, slightly better damage then "Shock" -Level 10 Flame: Lower mana, otherwise fine. -5 Mana -Level 15 Enhanced Sphere: Never use it...Can’t really tell ya... -10 Mana -level 15? Haste: Great spell, doesn’t need much other than a drop in cost... -20 Mana -Level 15 Displace: Spell that makes you nigh untouchable with normal attacks by reflecting light differently making you appear at a different location. Significantly raises dodge percent. -20 Mana -Level 18 Mana Shroud: As Enhanced Sphere... -20 Mana -Level 20? Blast: Increase damage to compete with Storms Wrath, lower cost. -7 Mana -Level 20 Vortex Gate: Make it more useful, teleport to any inn or your clan house, seems to be not too powerful... -40 per person -Level 23? Beam: Great spell, though WAY to expensive. Needs to be able to do damage on par with Aid and near the same price. -10/12 Mana -Level 25 Polymorph: (Needs new name as it doesn’t truly reflect the spell) Ridiculously Enhances strength and dexterity as well as changes your current weapon into some currently nameless weapon temporarily turning you into a butt kicking combat machine. While in this form you are unable to cast spells. You also receive 1 extra stamina. -100 Mana -level 25 Aura of Protection: Otherwise fine, but I do have 1 complaint. It is not normal armor, it is more of a magical field protecting the mage, so therefore ALL attacks should hindered as it isn’t like armor that can be penetrated...Just a thought. Devastate: Can't comment... Some of the levels are wrong, that’s because it’s been a while since I actually purchased the spells, so I am not certain. The other issue I have with mages, is the stamina. They should definitely round out better instead of getting their last three stamina in the last 10 levels. Maybe: 1 (obviously), 9, 18, 24, 29...

Well, just after that nice post, I realized I left out something that I should have added. Yeah yeah, I could just edit that post, but it wouldnt look as nice. Ok, so Shock is pretty weak for a spell that needs to be used to get all the way to level 15, so why not change the damage around abit? (Considering the likelyhood of my previous suggested spells not getting implemented). So you take your Intelligence and level, and find a good way to make a reasonable amount of damage. Lets say, you are an elf with a 21 int, level 1. So maybe Int*lvl*.5 21*1*.5=10.5, Round up or down? Lets say down. So a level 1 mage with 21 int does approx. 10 damage, use int to randomize it a bit and there ya go. Now lets see how it progresses: Level 1 - 10 Level 2 - 21 Level 3 - 31 Level 4 - 42 Level 5 - 52 ...Not a chance... Maybe level+int+(wis diff*2)*.5 Wis Diff being the difference in your intelligence and the targets wisdom. If the targets wisdom is greater, then you lose damage total... 1+21+(20-15(average wisdom I would guess for a goblin...))*.5=13.5/(13) Sounds good, now to level 5... Level 2 - 14 Level 3 - 14 Level 4 - 15 Level 5 - 15 Not great...Hmm...at level 30 - 28 Not great damage... Lets try one more...Same "settings" Int+(lvl*(Wis Diff/2[ROUND ^]))*.5 Level 1 = 12 5?= 18, not bad... 10 = 25...Doing good... 14 = 31...Yes! 30? = 55...ouch...could be bad...thats a blast right there... Well anyways, if other characters can just change their weapons at regular intervals, and we get a new spell at level 1, 15, 20, 25 that can do damage, that seems a little weak... I guess though, this is all coming from boredom...Whatever...

Thanks, though for some reason, I doubt that either JLH, Pandilex, or anyone else with some say has even bothered to read it. So I highly doubt that they will add anything. Of course, I would like more feedback, but I dont think these boards are widely read...

| Light could also have the same effect as a Torch. I think you can't enter some areas unless you have one, and in some areas it improves the description of the area? If so then Light could also do that (when cast on yourself)

Very good, I didn't know about those areas. But yeah, the basis of these cantrips is to provide other uses, out of combat, as well. Kinda makes the mage more of a multipurpose character as they usually are.

What makes you say that? I see no spells there that mages shouldn't have...

Polymorph is a typical mage spell.. druids should get morph as an ability, not a spell, while mages have to use magic to change.

I like these ideas very useful. I would use them and it would rounjd out a mage making him a usefl class instead of a 'kick me because I am always down' class.

I really like your'e ideas, good thinking. Mirror sounds good, I think it would be fun, maybe raise the lvl that you need to be to use it though. A lvl 5 mage shouldn't need it too much anyway. If they went ahead and made polymorph then they would have to make druids morph an ability because that does take a bit of their individuality away. --Monte (a mage owner)

I think polymorph would be a little much because mages do not have the str backing up the ability to lose spell casting in exchange for weapons anyway so it would prolly be little used.
