Mages could possibly call a summoned creature to fight in his/her place. The mage itself no longer becomes attackable, and the summoned creature is now controlled by the mage, when the creature is destroyed the mage losses half of his hp. Mana cost would be quite rediculous perhaps 150, but it does get you out of a jam.
