when I go to create a character, everything looks ok...I have to enter a name and all the races/classes are greyed out. However when I click the ok button for my name, all the races/classes disappear, the check boxes are still there, but that is it. If I select a race with forbidden classes, they show up greyed out, but not the allowed ones....

i'd guess it's that windows xp theme you are using, try just the default one to see if that fixes it
