So I'm using Wine and it isn't working. When I try to install it gives me an access violation error message. Does anyone know a way around this?

I don't think Nightmist rusn on WINE.

JLH should think about making a Linux/Unix client.

NM was made in Microsoft Visual Basic, it can't be ran on Linux.

Hence MICROSOFT Visual Basic.

WINE lets you run alot of Windows apps.

Hence MICROSOFT Windows.

But is WINE able to run MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC, no.
Windows apps, sure, probably becuase their Multi-Platform, but I have yet to come across something made in MICROSOFT Visual Basic that will run on WINE.

Just because it's MICROSOFT, doesnt mean it cant be emulated. People have got MICROSOFT Internet Explorer to work in Linux. There should be a way to get this to work as well.

Get an OS that will actually run stuff.

I didn't ask for your opinion on my OS. I was asking for help getting this to work in my OS. If you don't know how to help me, then keep your useless comments to yourself. And besides: People have got Half-Life 2, World Of Warcraft, City Of Heros, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office to run using WINE in Linux, so I'm pretty sure that Linux will "run stuff".

Keep your cool, please.

An access violation usually occurs when the program is trying to access memory that it is not allowed to touch (such as memory reserved by another program), commonly caused by an invalid memory address (for programmers, a null or undefined Pointer, or deallocated memory). Exactly when does the error appear? As soon as you run the install program or when you start installing the files?

It isn't possible for you to install Nightmist in a pure Windows environment and then transfer the files manually to your WINE system, is it? (P.S. if you are struggling with transferring due to file sizes, it isn't necessary to manually transfer the gfx files - they can be downloaded from the server)

From everything I have heard in the past, NM will not run on linux, even if you use an emulator. The easiest way to play anyway, even if it completely destroys the whole reason for running on linux to begin with, is to create a small partition of your hard drive to run windows and use it just for NM.

Personally I think a NM client for linux would be nice though, maybe if we can all beg JLH to be sweet he will do it one day.

i don't see why anyone would run linux, to then run WINE, to then run microsoft office, and other windows based things

EITHER

run linux, and use openoffice (apparently very good - never tried it)

OR

just run windows like most people since that's what games and apps are made for anyway.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree. Windows has security problems pouring out of it's rear end. It's very vulnerable to viruses. It isn't all that stable. Linux doesn't have these problems. The point of running Linux and then using WINE to run Windows programs is to get the games and stuff that you like with the stability and pure awesomeness of the Linux OS. Also: I refuse to believe that Nightmist won't work on WINE. If they can get Half-Life 2 and World Of Warcraft to work on Linux, then they can get Nightmist to work.

They get them to run on Linux becuase their coded like that. Linux also has security problems, it's just not much people know about them. JLH is working on NM2 mainly now and doesn't have the time to make NM compatable for WINE. Who knows, maybe NM2 will be able to be ran on WINE.

It's not about making NM compatible with WINE. WINE should be able to run anything. It even can run Internet Explorer with some tinkering (Of WINE. Not IE).

I'm asking if anyone has configured WINE so that NM works with WINE.

Well, from what I have read, it is the Install program that you have having trouble with, not the actual game. Try downloading the client EXE manually from the Nightmist FTP: ftp://www.nightmist.co.uk/nightmst.exe - the client should handle the downloading of the pictures and sounds etc. It just might be a bit slow until the majority of the image files are downloaded.

Thank you for that. I tried running it, but it gave me and error message saying "Invalid Picture", though... Maybe it doesn't automatically download the pictures like you said...

You could download ALL the pics manually but that might take a while.

Downloading just the exe without actually installing the game leaves you without some necessary DLLs and such. As soon as you run the game you get an error saying you need libbz32.dll or something, so that's not gonna work.

It does download them while in the game, but it probably does not with the portraits that you are meant to see when creating a character. Downloading all of the pictures from the nmpics directory into a subfolder named "gfx" would solve this, but it would take a long time. Our apologies that this is proving awkward.

It's ok. I'm just kind of annoyed that a while ago I asked if Nightmist could be run in WINE and people told me that they did it no problem... and now that I go to do it, the people who did it in WINE no problem disappear... >>

I got the thing installed. I just can't run it... >>

So did I, (install ran ok on Wine configured to emulate winxp), but when trying to run the game I get libbz2.dll missing ^_^

Heh - got it working mostly:

In winetools edit config file add:

; Nightmist
[AppDefaults\\nightmst.exe\\Version]
"Windows" = "nt40"

[AppDefaults\\nightmst.exe\\x11drv]
"Desktop" = "1024x768"

The results aren't pretty and sound is missing, but the game works.

Thank you. As soon as I'm done installing Gentoo, I'll try that. (Decided to switch to Gentoo)
