i just read this article about ibm claiming to have huild the fastest super computer in the world. currently a japanese company called NEC has the fastest computer called EarthSimulator. it has the power of 35.86 teraflops. 1 teraflop being 1000000000000 calculations a second (i dunno the english word for it but it's 1000 billion calculations a second.) now the new IBM BlueGene/L System has a capacity of a whooping 36 teraflops.

now the big questions is: WIll it run Nightmist? and if so. How many alts could i run?

Or more to the point, how much does it cost?

Apparently this supercomputer consists of 9000 Pentium Processors working in parallel synchronisation, and is used where complex calculations are required in real-time... a popular one is simulating nuclear explosions.

I think it would run Nightmist PDQ, but lag would still be decided by the capacity of the cables connecting it to the Internet.

yeah but it would run lots of alts without getting white screens i think :P but a computer like that must be on like a 100mb line lol

actually i think a computer using 9000 pentium processors would create so much heat that it will cause a nuclear implosion... not unless they have to room temperature constantly at 30-60 degrees fahrenheit. if the room temp exceeds 120f then the whole entire room will be a giant melted army man.

I watched a video of a person over-clocking their processor God-knows how many times. I think they were able to get to 500 GHz. Maybe it was 50 or 5000. I'm bad with numbers.

Either way, they had to construct a cooling system around it using Nitro-glycerine (the stuff that freezes roses so you can shatter them with a hammer).

When they did it without the custom cooling system (just to see what happened), it burned a hole through the mother-board.

Sure, it can do a Kwazillion thingies a micromillionth of a second.. But can it make flying monkeys?

Also Cool. What kind of clock speed is that though does it say?

aw man, but the earth simulator is too cool to get the silver medal. whatever ibm does with thiers it can't be as cool as predicting natural events all over the globe.

and prophet, i don't think there is a clock speed on supercomputers per se. as i recall they use lots of processors. i remember some college class made a supercomputer out of G5's, and those had something like 2ghz processors, and when it was done it could compete with other supercomputers fairly well.
wouldn't it be funny if rich had registered this name first, and you were bickering with him?

I want one. If my stove goes bad I can always cook on the processor instead, kinky multi usage computer!

yeah that's it i just got confused because it's a billion in dutch but a billion in english is 1 000 000 000 right? ^_^

Either way, they had to construct a cooling system around it using Nitro-glycerine (the stuff that freezes roses so you can shatter them with a hammer).

i guess it is called "liquid Nitrogen" the same stuff that froze the t-1000 in terminator 2: judgement day.

nitro glycerine is explosive, so why would they put something explosive and unstable next to a vibrating, heating machine???

correct

even though putting nitro glycerine on a melting hot cpu would make a nice big explosion I wouldn't want to miss :P

lol nitro glycerine will not cool liquid nitrogen will lol. also you can not keep overclocking your processor because of the limits of the bus speed on most motherboards. the processor can sent data faster then the bus can ahndle and it will screw up things.

Blah, sorry. ^^; I knew I was using the wrong word but it was the only one that could come to mind.

And I'm not a techie-kind of person. I don't know what exactly they were doing but they were making the processor work um-teen times faster than it should. It was just fun to watch. :P

www.tomshardware.com for tech news like that, it is liquid nitrogen that is used.
