Below the desert lies an area, infested by living Shadows. However, recently, a few hearty mages have discovered the exact cause of the Shadows. Apparently, between two rather large boulders lies a slit in the fabric of space. Through the use of the spell "Vortex Gate", this "rip" can be fully extended creating an actual portal to another realm.

When you try to enter the portal, you are forced to retreat. Your body feels cold beyond the gate and your mind simply cannot take the strain.

Your walk through the portal. You immediately feel a chill and painful surge in the back of your mind. However, your years of magical training allow you to withstand the searing onslaught.

[This area is mage only.]

A gritty, black trail: As you step down from your gate, you hear a crunch under your feet. The night-air is stale and it is difficult to see. You can go [direction].

A gritty, black trail: The trail is made of tiny, black pebbles. They crunch under your feet with an odd grinding sound. The path is neat...but you cannot tell to where it leads. There are small shrubs to your sides. Off in the distance, you hear odd night-time sounds.
  • [Monters: Shade Beetles, Black Owl]
A black, cobble-stone path: The trail is no longer made of loose gravel but solid stone. The air is still cold and difficult to see through. Off in the distance, you can see tiny lights.

A black, cobble-stone path: The path is made of large, black stones. The plants have seemed to stop growing here. Along with the distant lights, you can hear the sound of laughing.
  • [Monsters: None]
Small village: The lights seem to be moving, the closer you approach. The smell has shifted from night to a bustling city...yet...there is nobody here.

Small village: There are buildings all around you. However, the wood seems to be painted black. You can hear signs creaking in the night-breeze but it's difficult to see anything. None of the buildings have lights inside...but you do notice various lit lanterns in the distance.

Did you mean poltergiest, for that last area?
I am very sorry, if not for something I did, then it is for something I will do.

Perhaps its a mutation from the common poltergiest.

Not all monsters have to have pre-concieved names....

True, thats why he asked first, rather than instantly corrected him :)

Sounds pretty good so far.. I also quite like the sound of a mage only area :)

<Continued from above; I can't edit the first post>

Abandoned Armour Shop: As you walk along, you hear the floor-boards creak under your weight. There is a counter in front of you...but nobody behind it.

Abandoned Armour Shop: There are various armour stands but they are all empty. Atop the glass counter sits a rather large mug. It's almost as if the owner had just "stepped out" for a moment. However, the fact that this building is completely empty soon negates that idea.
  • [Monsters: Black Bat]
/read "Welcome to Suxarb's Armour shoppe"

/examine Behind the counter, you notice a small piece of cloth. You have found a Shade Robe!

((Shade Robe is the exact same as Shroud of Awe.))

Abandoned Weapon Shop: The walls are lined with empty weapon racks. There is no floor, only a solid slab of black mud. There is an furnance in the back but it doesn't seem to have been used in a long time.

Abandoned Weapon Shop: As you concentrate, you feel an odd fluctuation in the air. It seems to be coming from behind the wooden counter. A chill goes down your spine...but you're not exactly sure why.

/examine The floor-boards behind the counter seem loose. When they are removed, you see a deep hole. You cannot see into it.

/read "Welcome to Cidle's Smithy"
  • [Monsters: Opaque Ghost]
You fall down the hole quickly. However, as you near the bottom, you realize the drop is too much for your body. You are instantly crushed.

You fall down the hole quickly. However, the long fall does not kill you. Your 'Protect' Spell slowly brings you to a halt, letting you touch down safely.

Giant Pit: The walls are made of solid, black stone. It is much too dark to venture without the aid of a torch.

Giant Pit: The walls are rough but become smooth as you venture further. There is no light at the end of this tunnel. It is much too dark to venture without the aid of a torch.
  • [Monsters: 2x Black Giant Rat]
Darkened Tunnel: Even with the aid of a torch, it is difficult to see. The darkness covers you like a blanket. Engraved upon the walls are strange markings.

Darkened Tunnel: It is quite stuffy here and it's becoming more and more difficult to breathe as you progress. The air seems warmer here. The markings are of a very ancient language. You can just barely make them out.

/read To him, I give my flesh and soul. To me, he gives eternal life.

I am in full support of this area, I like it. Though the Shade Robe would have to be a limited find, other than that, I'm all good.

Rocky Clearing - Well of Souls: Strangely, the rock walls have expanded, leaving a fairly clean clearing in front of you. In the middle of this clearing seems to a well. On closer inspection, you see it is made of pure, black onyx. Infused directly into the stone are several, white bones and skulls; each of which seem to cry in agony.

Rocky Clearing - Well of Souls: As you peer down the well, you see it is not filled with water. Instead, at the bottom of it, swirl thousands of whisps. The air is suddenly filled with a painful shrill; a shriek that chills you to the bone. You realize that you are seeing and hearing the agony of a thousand souls.

Place your hand in the well.
As your extend your hand, your mind and body feel as if they are restored. However, something deep within your soul makes you feel strangely uneasy.

Warm Tunnel: The air is stuffy and difficult to breath. The walls are clamy to the touch.

Warm Tunnel: The smell is terrible, like sulfer and rotting vegetables. Besides your torch, there is almost no light here. You notice a small spark or flame at the end of the straight...but it is barely noticable.
  • Monsters: Onyx Beast, Onyx Pigmy
Hot Tunnel: Sweat beads down your face as you press on. It has become almost unbearably hot. The air seems to be as thick as blood. The tunnel is becoming strangely illuminated.

Hot Tunnel: The smell is nearly unbearable. The smell of sulfur seems to overwhelm you. You have the strong desire to retch where you stand. The rock walls are almost too hot to touch. You can feel the heat rising from the floor. The illumination seems to be coming from the end of the tunnel.
  • Monsters: Onyx Pigmy Party
Bright Tunnel - Dragon's Lair: The light of your torch reveals to you two eyes and a toothy grin. The eyes are a brilliant green and the over-all face is a scaley black. You recognize the scale paterns and almost recoil in fear; you have encountered a dragon of monsterous size.

Bright Tunnel: Dragon's Lair: Pigmys seem to be running to and fro here. They throw buckets of whisps at the dragon. Those whisps seem to sink into the dragon as it grins with delight. You cannot see the rest of the dragon's body, only its head.
  • Monsters: Onyx Pigmy
  • Boss Monsters: Dragons' Eyes, Dragons' Fangs, Dragon's Head
An Onyx Pigmy throws a bucket full of various souls to the Dragon, healing it.
((By 20-30 HP; only happens if there are Onyx Pigmys present.))

The Dragon lets loose a low growling and two Onyx Pigmys come running.

A blast of energy emanates from you, injuring a Dragons' Eyes for 42 points of damage, closing it.
((The Dragon no longer attacks; it may still be healed by Pigmys; it cannot summon Pigmys.))

With a groan, the Dragons' Eyes re-open, staring you down with piercing green eyes.

The Dragon's Fangs are snapped at you for 52 points of damage.

A blast of energy emanates from you, injuring a Dragons' Fangs for 42 points of damage, destroying it.

The Dragon's Head opens its gaping jaws and expels Vapor at you for 21 points of damage.
The Dragon's Head opens its jaws and expels a Dark Fire at you for 28 points of damage.

/examine ((After all monsters are destroyed; if not, the examine yields no finds.))

You part the gargantuin fangs to reveal a small scroll.
You got the Scroll of [blank].

((I'm missing descriptions for other parts of the town. I also don't know what this Dragon will drop. I was hoping the scroll of a spell...but there are no spells (currently) that would be suitable for this.))

Scroll of Dragon Skin

This scroll was invented by the dragons and granted to their lesser mage servants and cultists. It is said to contain a spell that will protect a mage from harm.

(Same as Gae's Blessing)

That is just a suggestion, I could most likely come up with a more shadow based spell if ya want.

What do you mean 25/75 Staff of Darkness? 1/3 chance of droping?

...Also, a new staff seems a bit...un-needed for a mage.

I agree with the death's hourglass. Well, yet another way of defending your useless HP, especially before AoP is gained is needed for a mage I think, personal choice and your area, you can decide, sorry, not able to think of another spell right now, I will work on it though.

My first intuition was to make the scroll "Sacrificial Ritual" but that's not really a spell and just a suggestion...and my suggestion to boot. It would be bad form to promote that, I think.

Ahh, I like the idea, and the descriptions. :)

I don't think Dragon Skin is needed... (not only does it have almost the exact name of a type of armor for druids/fighters (Dragon's Skin), but it also would really overpower AoP when you cast them both. I'm guessing you could, since you said it'd be the same as Gaea's blessing... /shrug).

I like the Deaths Hourglass spell idea...and it would be cool if it could be put in along with this area.

And, another staff isn't needed...just buy one. :)

Yeah, well, there's my 2 cents.

2, sacrification ritual might well work in here, I like the idea of putting it here.

I'd also like to put an emphasis on the description of the Dragon; it was killed using "Blast".

This area would be for levels 15-25, preferably. No level restrictions really. A level 30 mage would still have quite a bit of trouble taking down the Dragon unless it's assisted.

I like this idea.
And a good job of taking the time to think it out.
And you are better than most for waiting and thinking about the drop,
Instead of posting something that would obviously help a mage,
You are at the same time allowing others to contribute to the drop.

How un-selfish.
