Now I know this 'idea' has been thought up before, but I did some thinking into it and actually came up with an actual system for it:

Ability: Guard/Cover

fighter: /cast guard/cleric

General public see: Fighter steps infront of Cleric, ready to deflect any onslaught.

Fighter sees: You stand before Cleric, ready to protect him in an instant.

Cleric sees: Fighter stands before you, becoming a living shield for you.

What it does:

Basicaly, when a fighter 'casts' his defense (I only say cast because that is how most abilities are generalized in Nightmist) on another player, all attacks made against that player automatically target the Fighter instead. the dodge/armor absorbtion modifier is carried over to the fighter.

Advantages:
1. Fighter has a purpose!
2. Will make pking a bit more interesting, you never know who the fighter will be guarding, so if you ambush someone you may not have the desired effect you were hoping for.

Disadvantages:
1. your fighter gets beat the crap out of, but thats ok, its his job.
2. Will be explained in detail:

In order to defend someone, a fighter must use the skill, which drops him/her to 1 stamina, this is to show he has taken a defensive action to truely guard someone, and from then on the fighter may attack, but cannot drop under 1 stamina.

A fighter that is guarding cannot move a party, would be very convienient if you get jumped to have your fighter run you out since he cant use his last stamina, however he still can follow in a group.

The fighter may target anyone to defend, though 2 fighters cannot defend the same person.

I can't remember now if there was any more, boring day at work so...too bad i didnt have a pen and paper to write it all down, i'll add it later if i remember.

Sounds good to me.

I wonder how this'd go along with a Stance ability for Fighters (which is still a must have!).

I guess when a Fighter is defending someone, it inturn, can't be defended? Otherwise it could turn into a rather complex chain of defence ;p

Correct, the ability can't be stacked in any direction. And a fighter can't defend another fighter becuase it would just go on and on and on....

What if my fighter defends a fighter who is defending me? o_O;

Edit: Okay, so I didn't read the entire thread. Shut up, I'm allowed one. XD

I kind of like this idea. ^^ Reminds me of Paladins in Final Fantasy using Cover which was something I really liked to do. ^^

I know I'd use this if it were put in game.

One question though, do you think Fighters could get exp. for covering another character? Obviously, at a reduced rate.

I don't think someone it should br PvM, because you could take an arch fighter, and a really low lvl that would die in one hit by a monster, and train it without it being able to die.

To get past that, you could level restrict it, say, within three levels, otherwise;
You are too weak to provide any form of protection for Squee.
Squee is too nieve to follow your instruction, preventing you from guarding him.

Perhaps it can be done like how they tried pvp +5/-5 levels, would make it a reasonable level difference, and you need more balancing to it, add a % to 'fail' to guard someone, i.e. there is still a slight chance that the fighter fails to do his duty, the % will decrease at the higher levels..etc.

The idea had been kicked around by some people, but no one actually organised it all, so I decided to do it.

Lets see some support for fighters!

I don't think restricting it is a must. If a crit is really low level, it'll miss the monsters anyway. If it's mid level, nothing should really kill it that it can train off of...

Making a fighter invis while protecting another crit might be odd, too. They'd definatly at least have to become visible after the first attack, in my opinion.

This could be odd to deal with in duels, which makes me like it quite a bit :-)

I think it should be stackable...however, there'd have to be some kind of limit..if you're in a party of a cleric and 5 fighters---the 5 fighters could all defend the cleric, but possibly some kind of through damage sometimes made, or the fighters could sometimes be caught unaware (possibly upping that % if people are invisible when attacking or using magic to attack)
Wisdom is the principle thing. Therefore, get wisdom, and in all your getting, get understanding.

Not from an assassinate coming from covert - As you can't see the person. If the thieves is in the open, I think the Fighter should be able to get in the way.

Fighter can stop a shot coming from a visible player, and an invisible fighter is immediately revealed if he takes a hit for someone else.

Sorry that should be Can't

The fighter can't guard against a covert assassinate

What about, if (with a 5 lev restriction) a l5 druid tries to maim a l15 crit protected by a l20 fighter? The fighter is getting hit but cant fight back

Or, if a l20 druid tries to maim a l10 crit protected by a l5 fighter? again the fighter is been bullied but cant hit back

I don't see a problem with that. If a level 5 character tries to attack a level 16 or higher crit, it really won't make a difference.

Likewise, it's just not feasable for a low-level fighter to protect a character of such a high level. If the fighter dies as a result of it, it's the fighters fault.
