The gnomes are a bashful race, extremely intelligent and rightfully warey of the other species that inhabit the world. Back in the age of discovery, when the races finally began making contact with each other, there was a Gnomish Explorer who went by the name of Aristle.
Aristle was adventuring through a huge forest, the sky almost completely blacked out by the canopy of tree's overhead. The Large Forest was inhabited by huge bears, with claws the size of a shield and poisonous snakes. Upon his travels through this forest, he met a vast amount of different people. He was scared and cautious, but his lust for knowledge kept him pressing on. His encounters with the other people, were on the most part pleasent. A human cleric created a magical spring for him to drink from, and a passing druid cured his hunger. He began to feel calm and relaxed while walking through the forest, up untill he reached the tree.
This tree was not an ordinary tree, along the outside there were many large axe marks into the bark, and the inside was hollowed out. Upon investigating he noticed that something would live here. Shouting at the top of his voice he yelled "Hello there, my name is Aristle! I mean you no harm". There was no reply, but he could hear something. He could not quite place the sound, but it was getting louder. Maybe the creature approaching could not understand him? He waiting patiently, sliding his hand down onto the hilt of his dagger.
50 yards from where the gnome stood, he looked up and saw what had been making the noise. He started shaking, sweat instantly appearing on his forehead. His hands went clammy and his stomach turned inside. The man... Beast stood infront of him was huge. He stood around 8 ft tall, and had the bones and skin of animals hung across its body. In his one hand he held a giant axe, that was only slightly smaller than Aristle himself.
The beast approached Aristle, raising his huge axe above his head as if to strike. Quickly Aristle darted out of the way, sneaking around the giant and hiding behind one of the bushes. The beast, looking disoriented, started swinging wildly. Aristle knew he wouldnt be able to outrun this man, his legs were much longer than his and looked muscly enough to crush a wallnut. Waiting patiently for his chance, Aristle dived out of the bush, leaping into the air. Grasping his dagger in both hands, he plunged the blade into the giants back. Unfortunatly, this deadly strike that had served him well all his life, seemed to do nothing but annoy the large foe stood infront of him. The beasts eyes started to glow with an intensity that rivaled his mothers when he had been causing trouble as a youth. He knew this was a sign to escape, to run, to avoid certain death.
Aristle dived, ducked and weaved to avoid the crushing blows from his enemy, all the time trying to reach into his bag. The giant swung his axe and buried it into the ground where the gnome stood just seconds before. "Whats this?" Aristle thought. The giants blade was stuck fast into the ground. Using this time he managed to open his backpack and take out a small potion. Quickly drinking it, he felt his body fade away as he became invisible. "Thank god for Tarma Potions" he thought.
Quickly retreated back into the forest, he made his way home through the dense undergrowth. "Back to Fairway" he thought.
Reaching the gates, the gnome mages had sensed his approach and came to greet him. All eager and willing to hear about his travels, he leads them into the library and sits down around the fire. He slowly starts to recall his adventures, leaving the encounter with the "Berserker" as he has came to call it, till the very end.
After he finished with his tale, the gnome mages seem shocked and scared. They shuffle around the library, pulling out old dusty books from the shelves and sitting down to read. Days went past, with no luck. One night, a group of mages darted through the streets, exclaiming "We have it, we have it", waking up the entire city in the process. After a few hours of preperation, they cast the spell they were seaching for. It was an invisibility spell, but not the usual one. They wernt just making another person invisible. They made the entire city vanish. Vanish from the outside world, so that the berserkers may never find them.
Until now.
