I wonder, when people are reporting things to staff as offensive, what kind of guidelines would there be?

I know there are a lot of words that offend me personally, that don't offend other people. Then there are also things like the word "cigarette" which, in America, is a derogitory term for a homosexual, while in England, its a cigarette.

I understand that just because I don't think something is offensive, it doesn't mean that no one else does. But it doesn't occur to some people that the things they say are offensive.

For example, I'll be talking to one of my friends, and he'll say something that I find to be completely disturbing and offensive on a moral level (I should note, that I do take most things in stride, and am rather hard to offend... with exception of course), but he doesn't realize at all that the things he's saying could be taken to be offensive in any way.

I can say that hearing the words "cigarette" or "cigarette" send chills up my spine, and hearing "thats so gay" does make my blood boil. A few people I know will call other people "spicks" or "wetbacks", or use phrases such as "######-lipping" when it comes to smoking. It bothers me to no end, but it doesn't occur to them that what they're saying is actually offensive.

I think that yes, there are some really offensive things thrown around nightmist, and I think that something could be done to stop it.

Theres no way to stop everyone from being offended, or to stop everyone from offending someone else.

So I guess I'm just repeating what so many others have said.

I'd like to see it implimented. However, it's easier said than done.

Here's my view. If it's in..
Open Chat-Imediate report to staff, if none online, leave a memo.
Clan Chat- /clan disband
Friend chat- /friend [player]
Page-Imediate Report to staff, if none online, leave a memo.
Yelling- If it does not stop, memo a staff, if it does stop, a staff has already taken care of it.
Profile- Ask em to remove it, if not, tell or memo a staff.
Memo- Memo a staff

What the what?

Fairly good guidelines. Staff see all yells no matter where the culprit is; therefore if they are online at the time they will deal with it as they see fit. What would be better is if everyone could just get along and not swear at and insult each other. But that is unlikely to happen.

Five year olds going to school hear more cuss words then u see here. Nightmist isn't some Garden of Eden, you all need to lighten up. How can a word say'n by some guy on a game you don't know be offensive. If you're already crying about this you're so gonna get crushed in the real world.

I don't know which school those five-year-olds go to but that still does not give you the excuse to swear on here - Crane

Hmmm, I have an idea...have an invisible NPC on every square that can't be visioned, and it could scan chat for offensive things. Even if it's not a swear word, I think racist comments and sexual stuff is bad, which people, even in front of staff, get away with. It's actually sad.

The other day, my six year old niece walked up to me and said something about what an effing nig (she actually used the words, however...) one of her neighbors was.

Just because she already knows that kind of hate speech, doesn't mean she should be allowed to use it.

Just because a person knows how to swear, doesn't mean they should be encouraged to do it.

I'll admit. I can be a rather profane person. My writing style tends to be rather profane at times.

Even when every other word out of my mouth used to be the f word, I would cut it out when I knew it was innapropriate, or when I was generally interacting with others.

I can also say, from experience, that anyone who says "words have never hurt anyone" is very, very wrong.

When I was 14, I was called "gay" and a "cigarette" for years and years. Not because I "acted gay", but because it was a string of words with a negative connotation, and being a closeted homosexual, who suffered from clinical depression, being called a cigarette, and having it being equated with something stupid, wrong, and vile was just making things worse, and it drove me to attempting suicide.

After I came out of the closet, I got chased down hallways at school. I heard people talking about me, pointing me out in crowds and saying things like "thats the cigarette, right there."

I digress.

How is swearing offensive??

Swearing is not offensive. If you can let yourself get offended by a small sound, that's not particularly personal to that person, then you really need to have your head checked.

I have to strongly dissagree. Sorry.

note: sorry if i let anything fly on accident. i kinda got caught up in what i was saying, and lost track of what i ended up typing. I read through it really quickly before I posted, but I didn't see anything.

What the what?

The point of that whole second part is:

We carry our pasts with us. Because I've had those things happen to me, I won't be able to hear things like that without sweating a little bit, or involuntarily shuddering, probably for the rest of my life. It was a rather round-about way of saying that, though.

Why should I have to view peoples' profiles and get all this sexual material? I don't want to know all this gross stuff. I don't think it's funny, I don't think it's cool, I think it's disgusting and I don't want to have to read it!!!

Get rid of it!

A few facts and an opinion:

I didn't know what any swear words meant, or even what part of speech they were until at least second grade. I just knew that they were "bad words". The younger people that play this game should not be exposed to such a disgusting habit as swearing and should not be reading profiles with sexual material in them.

Each time i log on i see:

Because of an increased amount of abuse from unruly players, if you give staff any abuse at all, including accusations of cheating, bad language, offensive comments, etc. then you can and will find yourself BANNED. Be polite and receive the same in kind.

Even tho i follow these guide lines myself, I now know this is total crap.
You want appropriateness your looking in the wrong place there are many other games that enforce there rules and guide lines maybe you should look elsewhere.

I was always raised with an open mind, and my parents never minded the cursing, to an extent.

If I fell on the ground and bruised myself and yelled, "Sh*t!", my parents wouldn't mind, yet if I said, "F*ck you, b*tch!", they were very offended and I would get punished/disciplined. The way I see it is,

User1: Oh sh*t I fell in the pit!
-and-
User2: F*ck you, wh*re! Just quit the f*cking game if you can't deal with me, assh*le!

are two VERY different things. User1 is something that I assume everybody should just deal with and be open to because its simply words, and nothing is offensive, but when you get User2 sitting around and offending people, I feel that staff should be a little more strict with these.

Just my opinion.

Oh, and different people have different tastes in humour as well as in food, sex and most of the other nice things in life, so I would suggest you do not try to cram your particular taste down everybody else's collective throaths, (TOS notwithstanding).

In other words: Quit whining or quit the game...

That said, if I am talking to you in CC, EC or FC, (fat chance for either one ^_^ ), and you ask me not to swear, why then I will immediately stop doing so :P

[OFF TOPIC] And if this sounds like I would like an age limit on the game, you have read me correctly - the limit being the age of consent in the player's jurisdiction, wherever that may be.

The reason why User2's comment is offensive and not User1's comment is because User2's is actually directed at someone and hence the insult is personal. "Accidental swearing", as it is sometimes called from injuring yourself in real life or walking into a death trap on Nightmist, is not as offensive because it is just an interjection not actually directed at a particular person (except the area developer maybe).

Even so, it is best to avoid swearing altogether, even if you do walk into the wrong place in the game; try using something milder like "Blast!" or "Drat!" or my father's favourite: "Oh, Christmas!"

I wouldn't give a link to this game to my 7 year old son, nephew or niece either - not because of the off chance that the poor lil' darlings might see a profile with more or less sleazy sexually oriented material in it, (which, at least in this country, they probably will not take as anything they haven't seen before), but A: because this game has an implied level of blood and gore that I would not take the responsibillity for exposing kids of that age to, and B: the playerbase has deteriorated to the point where those of us actually trying to play the game, (rp'ing or not), are constantly having our playing interrupted by kids running around and treating the game as a platform for bragging and generally converting the game to a kindergarden.

I've played for a long, long time, and I have never, not ever, come across cybering in any of the chats - the solution to that particular problem would be the one proposed by Ryuku.

Here's my view. If it's in..
Open Chat-Imediate report to staff, if none online, leave a memo.
Clan Chat- /clan disband
Friend chat- /friend [player]
Page-Imediate Report to staff, if none online, leave a memo.

Profile- Ask em to remove it, if not, tell or memo a staff.
Memo- Memo a staff, I dislike offending memo's, cause a players doesn't have the balls to tell me when I'm on.

Thank you, and goodnight

Edit: Forgot the last 2

Where I must admit, I do not concur with the "profile" entry since it is your choice to view a profile.

Rappy, you should try reading my whole post - read the last two paragraphs of my post in particular, and tell me if that is not a reasonable solution to the swearing problem.

it is itelligent, i just keep it brief and to the point instead of writing out long paragraphs that most people prob wont read because too lazy, basicly fact is people swear everywere not just this game unless its stoped everywere it wont stop its became part of way society think and talk, its movies music and stuff people just have to accept this for what it is and let it pass unless of course its directed at sumone then i can understand what yall get pissy about.

It would be easier to agree with you if you weren't changing your mind every post. Yes, you do have a point, but still, keeping this game as clean-cut as we can is the point of this. This ISN'T a movie. I agree with Satterlee about the whole directing it towards someone, becuase the little kids that don't swear, I'm sure they won't mind that, and the kids that do swear won't either. The fact of the matter is all the kids that play this game, even though I'm 100% sure they have heard/seen/said a swear word, it would be best if they don't again.
