Honestly, if the new Final Fantasy game (13?) comes out for PS3 only, I'll probably buy a PS3.

Its coming out for 360 to I believe

Indeed. According to a friend of mine, who I turn to about video games quite a bit of the time, FF13 will be released for the PC and Xbox360!

He said it was the big news from SquareEnix at E3.

I think so. The one without color does seem a bit dull in comparison.

Making progress.

I'm not building up the game like Nightmist was built up though, whereby it was made playable and then features were added. Instead I am adding all the tools and features for people to give me all the flexibility I want first, and after all that's done, then I will make the game.

That said you can see from the above screenshot that I am doing some stuff. The thing I am working on now is the NPC dialogue, quest and event trigger system. I have to get it right from the start so a lot of planning and design that is required.

I've already designed the first quest, so now I need to design a system that lets me implement it nicely. I might have to write some kind of scripting language, either way it will take a long time to get right.
If you build it, they will come.

Lucky for us we have Nightmist to hold us over until the 2028 release date.

If at all possible, make this a 2D game.
A game that has the appearance of the super nintendo Final Fantasy systems would actually attract me to it. I've found a game like that, but I think you could produce something much more in-depth, player friendly, and entertaining.

If you're just making a text-based MUD, it's going to take more than a better system than NM to really draw in long-term players. You'll need to cause real events, and not treat it like something you don't care about.
IE- Don't drop random quest items when you're bored without some type of system to allow them, especially not to simply prove that it'd upset people and that the game is faulty.
Wisdom is the principle thing. Therefore, get wisdom, and in all your getting, get understanding.

It won't be a 2d game sorry. It will be a fun text game, like old nightmist on steriods. Writing a 2d game means introducing a thousand more programming problems, and also needing an artist.
If you build it, they will come.

2D games aren't that hard, might even be easier. Especially ones the groundwork is done. And as for sprites

http://charas-projec...a...10&fsearch=

Millions of free sprites, yea so they aren't original...but who cares.

Maybe after OS

I had to make a choice about which to develop, and it was a tormenting problem that I wrested with for weeks. In the end, after a bitter struggle, I chose to do a text game, but to write it in such a fashion that I could seperate many of the core sections out, so writing a 2d game would let me use a lot of the existing code.
If you build it, they will come.

True, my mud is actually using a 2D game source! I just stripped out the DirectX and drawing code, and had to rewrite any feature that used the graphics system.

However, I wouldn't bother with a 2D game. Because then you have to find graphics artists that can pixel, and getting them motivated without paying them is just a hassle. So you might try free graphics or ripped graphics? Great! Now you have a game that looks like 100 others.

Unless you have graphics designers, writers, music composers, world designers, it's not even worth it. There are so many people developing non-profitable, amateur home-made games, with ripped/free graphics and media you wouldn't imagine (Hell, I'm one of them!)

I even run two 2D gaming projects, one closed-source for non-programmers which has a few nice features so far, and a very simple open source VB game project, using DirectX7 engine that isn't all that big on features but can be used as a starting point (http://www.TheFortress.co.nr)

The point is, if you're going to make 2D, I'd like to see a game to the standards of Dark Ages, NexusTK, or Endless Online (Free Dark Ages copy game). What I would also love to see is a 2D rendition of Nightmist (Which will never happen).

With a MUD, the audience is still there (Not so much with modern games), and you all you have to do is be creative with writing, graphics are unnecessary!

You got it in one, graphics artists are fickle!

To make it look good imagine how many graphics you need, every monster needs 4 graphics for facing each direction, 4 more for moving, and 4 more for attacking. It is pretty tedious to draw them all out.
If you build it, they will come.

Yep, or you could be really demanding and have 8-directional movement. Then you may even consider displaying a dead sprite when the character dies, purhaps turn them into a ghost.

As for Opal Spheres, that map looks nice

Not at the moment, I need to be settled, I am like a panda that only breeds when it's completely stress-free.

I quit my job and I am moving half way back across the world, and I have less than 30 days to completely sort my life out here, clear my apartment etc.

Unfortunately it's just one excuse after the other for why I am not doing OS or anything else for that matter.

Once I get back, who knows? I will be jobless!

Awesome. Hope it comes out sooner than later even if its a beta of some sorts. I'd enjoy playing it.

After playing WoW for oh so long i'd like to go back to my roots with a new text based game like OS.
