If you want to take it as a confession.... sure. I have come across a couple of different ones in my time and actually used one. However, I've never hit the finish button. (despite how tempting it has been, and yes; I'm aware no-one probably believes me: nor do I care).

For one, my last login was: 05-28-2005 16:38:56 (nearly 2 months ago, and only once a month before that to keep name).

Two, I just don't care. I have 3 level 1 crits in my acct with horrid stats. I've lost interest a long time ago after giving away all my stuff at SGH.

Now the poing being is that it's not that hard. Just think about manipulating the pixel in which and where the stats are generated and saving/changing that spot.
Cogito, ergo sum; I think, therefore I am.

Is there such a thing as an autoroller? Is it possible to create one?

To the first part of your question: Probably yes.

To the second part of your question: It would be no big problem to create, but the simple fact, that the rolling actually occurs server side, makes it no faster than physically clicking the "Reroll" button. The only advantages to an auto roller would be, that you don't have to a. answer stupid math questions, and b. have your attention concentrated on the screen to catch the good rolls.

The average time between 5- and 6-stats would be the same for people who use auto-rollers as for the rest of the NM population, and with the dilligence that JLH shows in examining logs, it would be noted if any user went on holiday and let his comp roll while he was away.

Edit: Typo

Actually it wouldn't. I would be able to code a routine to examine the shape of the blue, (or whatever colour), pixelated area to recognize the max stats.

To stop autorolling or make it of less value, make rolls one shot and enter the rolled crit in the account automatically. You would find that you would run out of names pretty fast and an account growing very fast with random letter names or deleting crits very fast could easily be spotted. Of course chances of good stats should be higher with this scheme.

And another one...

I'm not making accusations, but honestly, if you were going to build an autoroller, a smart thing to do would be to change the account you were rolling in after a little while. JLH, is it possible to verify this based on IP? or to look at the total amount of rolls this month?

It is extremally easy to make an auto-roller, i recall it took a friend of mine only a week or so and he was 14.....I don't know how he made it, but i do know that when you opened it, you had to choose the type of stats you wanted....5 stat physical...5 stat magic were a couple of the choices(the differance being in Str and Intel) and it rolled very quicky, then the math questions were added to the roller, it was still effective but each time a math question would pop up it would close out and re-open on its own, but this would cause the computer to tweak after a while so it would only work for a couple hours exept for Windows ME edition would run the program until it found what it was searching for no matter how long it took, i talked to him for the first time in a couple years and he said he just made a couple adjustments to the roller but it still works......he quit playing a long time ago, but he still messes around with the roller he claims and he may have passed it on to other people (spyder etc.....?) ^_^

I rolled for about 10 minutes and got:

Race/Class: Male Halfling Initiate Ranger. Str: 18, Int: 19, Dex: 21, Con: 17, Wis: 18, Chr: 14, Lev: 1, Exp: 0, HP: 18, MP: 0, Stm: 1.

and...

Race/Class: Male Elf Initiate Cleric. Str: 17, Int: 12, Dex: 19, Con: 17, Wis: 20, Chr: 21, Lev: 1, Exp: 0, HP: 17, MP: 21, Stm: 1.

Could be just luck.
