Actually, this class is basically a monk. Change the names and descriptions and you have the basic frame for a monk.

monks used a form of martial arts or basic combat. they werent allowed to use weapons, or harm the living really, as it was against their deity. and still is to this day :)

Squiggle seems to be ignorant in the standard fantasy classes and some more. The modern real life monk could not harm even a blade of grass, heck most sweep the ground lightly infront of them to knock away bugs so they are not crushed. Now fantasy monks are the Karate Kids of the world, they use staves, and other stuff as well as open hand combat. That would be like a lycanthrope, but I personally think the lycanthrope has more class than the monk, though your monk is pretty cool.

As i said, martial arts, but even in fantasy they were still religious, and in most games, are not allowed to use weapons, other than gloves and boots.

It depends on what you play. But IRL, many monks are required to train to use many kinds of weapons. It requires discipline, and helps them to find a balance. Though this is not about monks. this is about wolves. Lets keep it as such.

edit 1: This is going along with Silverwizards statement. not an argument/misunderstanding against it.
edit 2: Wolves of sorts. :) Not real wolves. but you all know what i mean  (and yes, the forum kills my emoticons *lazy*)

Squee, this is a wonderful idea. I'd like to add a few comments and questions:

1) It seems that new stamina, weapons, and abilities are grouped at a few levels:

level 3 : stamina
level 5 : ability(seeth), weapon(sharp canines)
level 8 : ability(track)
level 9 : stamina
level 12 : weapon(steel-tipped claws)
level 15 : stamina, ability(intimidate)
level 16 : weapon(iron claws)
level 20 : stamina, ability(curse of self)
level 22 : weapon(iron fang)
level 24 : stamina
level 26 : ability(pursuit), weapon(iron reaver)
level 29 : stamina, ability(ravenous bite)
level 30 : weapon(mithral jaws)

I tend to like having little bits of improvement all along the way, rather than having watershed levels where everything changes. Perhaps the stamina gain at 29 could be awarded at 28 instead (one level after berserkers obtain six stamina) and the curse of self ability could be postponed until level 21? I'd also suggest moving Iron Reaver to level 25 rather than 26... with a base damage of 25 (equivalent to the ever-present halberd) I don't feel it's overpowered for that level.

2) A comment on seven stamina: I don't feel that this is overpowered at level 29, but it may be at level 30. With the base damage for iron reaver being equal to a halberd, that extra attack makes up for some of the drawbacks of the class. However, at level 30, the base damage on the mithral jaws is equal to the base damage of a blade of time. Would a 7-stamina Lycanthrope regenerate 5 stamina per round? If so, I think this might be a bit over-powered, especially with some of the damage-enhancing abilities.

oh... and I think you want "ravenous bite" and "mithril jaws"

I actually never noticed how "bunched" up these abilities and improvements are. ^^;; I would've never noticed them had you not brought them up. ^^;

As for their damage, I really think they need it. Remember that you cannot log on any other alts with this. Also consider how much HP the average Lycan will get. It's lower than a Berserker's.

Also, their stamina would only recover 4 at a time. Recovering 5 at a time would give them a gross advantage.

(I know for a fact that I spelt "ravenous" right because I had to look it up. XD

...But I did spell "mithril" wrong. ^^; )

Hmm... Sounds good, but I'm still a little confused about some things.

1. I'm assuming that you buy the weapons (for example, Iron Claws, Iron Fangs etc) from shops, correct? (As the Mithril Jaws is a boss drop, then that must be the case). I just can't see how you buy new claws or teeth. Do you just rip out your old claws and replace them with new ones? Isn't that going to get a little painful? I would suggest that instead of buying new weapons and equipping them, you learn them from a magic scroll or a potion. Let me explain that.

You could add in a medium sized new area that includes Lycanthrope monsters, and at the end have a boss. There would be 5 different types of Lycanthropes. Each one would attack with the next weapon up. For example:

Start of area - Weak lycanthropes that attack with sharp canines
Just heading inside area – Fairly weak lycanthrope that attack with steel-tipped claws
Middle of area – Medium strength lycanthropes that attack with iron claws
Long way in – Strong lycanthropes that attack with iron fangs
Just before boss – Very strong lycanthropes that attack with ravenous bites
Boss – Extremely strong lycanthrope boss. Is the leader of the lycanthropes and attacks with mithril jaws.

Now, each time you kill one of the monster types there is a chance that the monster would drop a magic scroll. For example:

You rip at a Medium Strength Lycanthrope with your Steel-Tipped Claws for 50 points of damage, killing it.
Roaring in pain, the Medium Strength Lycanthrope falls to the flaw, dead. Death releases the human from the lycanthrope curse, which causes the body to return to its human form. The body begins to glow and a strange scroll appears on the floor.

(When you look at the scroll)

This strange scroll appears to contain the strength of the former Lycanthrope. Perhaps using it would make you stronger?

Now, I know the descriptions etc were crap, but you get the general idea. Maybe instead of a scroll it could be a potion: the lycanthrope drains the blood of the dead lycanthrope, and drinks it to gain his powers. *shrugs* maybe to prevent people from flooding to the area, only lycanthrope can get the potions… after all, why would a cleric be interesting in drinking the blood of a dead lycanthrope? :)

Anyway, you get the general idea.

I haven’t really put much thought into that, so I don’t really know how well it would work. The only problem I can see with it is that if lycanthropes ever do get introduced, straight away people are going to swarm into the area and slaughter everything. This might make it hard for some people to get new weapons.

That might not be a decent solution to your problem, but I honestly can’t see how you would buy new claws and replace your old ones with the new ones. It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Special notes:

  • Lycans will receive their new weapons automatically upon level up.

The names aren't meant to be taken litearlly. Do a Lycans claws actually become Iron when they level up? Of course not. They simply become harder, stronger and the Lycan can attack with them a lot more effectively.

Ummm, Squee, Mithril has been spelled Mithril and Mythril over the years, it is all preference. Next, how it is a boss drop, that confused me. Like the whole gaining weapon powers at lvl up though.

Well, I was just thinking that if the Lycan "finishes off" this certain boss, that Lycan's weapon would automatically get replaced by Mithril Jaws.

I know it doesn't make much sense...but that's how I see it.

I don't see Lycans really having weapons. Because Lycans are so powerful and such, these "weapons" are really just their body. As they level up, their body becomes stronger, tougher etc.
So, in turn, their "weapons" become stronger (Their nails become harder and tougher, their jaws become stronger etc.)

(P.S. I spelled "mithril" as "mithral" ^^;; )

Why not have the Mithril Jaws hit the Lycans inventory as an item like

'Soul of Wolfen'
A beautiful amber stone that pulsates with primitive power as though containing the conciousness of a long imprisoned beast.

When used, is works in a similar manner to a scroll, but instead, gives the new weapon/ability to the user.

Crushing the jewel in your hand, you are thrown violently backward as the soul of the contained lycan escapes, enveloping your entire body. You have been blessed with Mythril Jaws.

With stamina regenerating at a maximum of 4 per round, I have no trouble with the damage.

This is the only suggestion for a new class or race that I've ever seen that I would support. It is well thought-out and would be a very interesting and balanced addition to the game. I hope that the staff take notice.

I agree that the weapons auto gain would be really damn ahrd to code. ALso I have seen Mithral before, I have seen a bunch of spellings, Mithril is the most common though original was mythril.

Then how do you get a boss drop for a new weapon? It doesn't make sense - you either give them autoamtic new weapons, or you make them buy them. You don't do both.

Deval has a good idea though :)

...Lycans don't buy anything equipment wise. o_o

The only reason I wanted that last weapon to be a boss drop was so there could be some "superior" Lycans. You'll have (probably) 75% of all Lycans using Iron Reavers with the remaining 25% using Mithril Jaws.

I have just decided that Deval's method would probably be best. Mithril Jaws would simply be a "scroll" item. Once used, your weapon is changed.

That's because lycanthrope is just as suited as a race than a class. None of the current races are suited to it, but theres nothing we can do about that.
