I like the idea. Maybe make it if the alignment idea gets brought into game so the type of familiar changes with the alignment of player. Maybe have a Phoenix be one. Make it so it has so much HP, and becomes part of the casters party so it follows the mage around.

I like the idea of each class getting a different type of one. I seen that posted elsewhere too.

Well it would be cool way for having monsters just kill you even the good ones.

Familiars are very different than animal companions (traditionally anyway) - they have a mental bond with the mage, usually to the point of enhancing the mage in some way. Animal companions that Druid/Rangers typically have share an empathetic relationship only - no real enhancements, just companions.

So say these familiars attack other monsters. Would there be an xp system for them? So they go around and kill stuff, wouldn't it make sense for them to gain experience along with you?

Ummm maybe if they could hit then the xp they gain would be lost to you or 1/2 would go to you.

now do you all think that if we get familiars they should be with the mage from the start to be more powerful instead of just any lvl 30 going and getting one strong when we have to get them not?
