Several games that I have played have deterants from pking to allow new and old players to actually enjoy the game.  Diablo 2 uses the 'hostile' method.  You have to go hostile with a player you want to kill while in town to kill that player outside town.  I don't think that would work on Nightmist, but...  Runescape's method would.  If you attack a player you get a little skull icon above your head.  If you yourself are killed while having that skull above your head (which goes away after about 10 min) then everything you have drops, including gear.  Before somebody says, 'But, what if you accidentally attack somebody?' here is the solution to that, which is already in-game, /nokill.

Neither idea is 'dumb' as you so nicely put it. Both are actually good solutions to the problem. But neither could really be applied to NM without there being a big uproar (people are so scared of losing their special items).
 
I can't see much of a solution to the problem, other than what is already done, unfortuantly.

Well I just find it funny that there are guards around town but no highway guards I mean all these pkers are is simple low down highway men robbing random people when they are going town to town guards are normally on well travelled highways which would in this game be NM to BT (despite the fact that the only passage is a sewer but still) Aralinn to nightmist and all the one town to another routes.

How bout just putten a skull some where on the icon so if a pker does come onto your square you will now hes out pking so you can run?

Possibly some sort of wandering guard? If you get caught PKing, he escorts you back to a town. Kind of how the Tax Collector worked, he walked between Nightmist and Arilin towns.

The idea just doesn't really work for nightmist because of the way the game works and how people play it....ive never seen pking as a huge problem...back in the day i got raped when i only used lancaster....eventually you get some friends or a good clan and it isnt so seemingly you against the world...then eventually it is again, but you can take them.

Also, if you want to know if someone is a PKer, you can just check their profile. It displays the number of PKs. Though that could be from its previous owner, whatever.
 
A warning system could be a good thing... i'm not sure what I think.  
On one hand, Its kinda realistic in the way that you dont know who's going to kill you. A kid at my school killed his mom and his dad... no one would have suspected it. I'm sure that they didnt. Also, many people would make the argument that "what if you killed someone who attacked you! Then everyone would run away", or some other equally stupid reason why it shouldnt be implemented. While i understand that you may have accidentally killed someone, or that maybe they attacked you, or maybe even they were in a clan war with you... or whatever reason... you have the option of not killing them. Of... lets say... running.
 
On the other hand, it would be kinda nice to know if someone was going around killing people. So that if i've just come back from leveling, or if I am leveling, or have just made a good deal of money, and someone comes onto the square that I am currently training on, if i should flee or not.
 
But I think that it might detract from the game a little bit if you knew who would kill you. Maybe.
 
Also, like I said, I have no real opinion on this matter. Either way works for me. Though i think that the argument for not having a system is much weaker.
 
As for the highway patrollman, I think that it is a really nifty idea. Could be pretty interesting/cool. But uh... a few things.
 
1) If the patrolman comes onto the square, the fighting will only cease until he leaves. While this gives any people who would like to flee a chance to escape, there are those who would rather stand and fight. But the flee-er could always be being tracked.
 
2) I dont think that being sent back to a city is a very good punishment (or whatever you would like to call it). Maybe something a little more severe would be in order.
 
Suggestions:
 
Make the patrolman covert/hidden/invis. Hide him. That way people dont know if they will get in trouble for it or not. And if they wanna PK bad enough, they will.
 
When a character is caught, teleport them to a different square. A jail or something. Where they would have to pay to get out. Or something. (this one isnt good. But... like a more severe reprecussion than being put back into the city. If they are put back into the city, they will just continue to go back out and kill again. Not much of a deterrent)
 
If a player is attacking another player, the highwayman would arrest him.
 
The flaw with the highwayman idea is that there would have to be a certain sig that is different with monsters or various other NPC's than there is with players. If this is not already in the programming, the staff would have to go through and add non-corruptive programming to everything. This would be bad. Not only would it mean much more work and effort on the staffs part, there is a good chance that there would be bugs. And people would complain. A lot.
But if these signatures are already implimented, or there is a way of differentiating between an NPC and a player (to an NPC), there wont be a problem.
 
Blah. sorry about length of post. But yeah. This is just what I think. *shrug*

There is a percentage that you will drop things already. I lost a RB, no-one seen me cry, bytch, moan, etc.. bout it. If your going to die, common scence would say that your corpse would be loitered, so if anything were to be changed, I'd say make it so that if you die for any reason whatsoever, The dead corpse could be robbed of any items and gold within it's posession. (Including equipped items.)

I really don't see how adding the thing of losing items equiped would be added to nightmist.  Simply because the economy would be pretty fked up with all the people saving their gold and only buying basic equips.  Certain classes would get screwed over also.  Like rangers take very little to equip, however, a fighter, berzerker, druid, or thief would lose items that aren't as easy to get back as paying 10k in shop for each of them.
 
That and the fact that older players would get the shaft, which still doesn't make sense to me.  Not that they should be privilaged and stuff, but they shouldn't have the disadvantage of knowing anytime they leave town they could lose their expensive items on top of the more exp they already lose if they die.

Whether or not it makes sense can be debated back and forth. And whether its a good thing can also be debated back and forth.

First, this can be fixed so that it can't be 'raped.'  If you go 'fk' around with a lvl 20 and attack somebody, you get a skull icon.  If you attack a player that has a skull icon active, you yourself don't get a skull.  Problem solved.
 
Second, why would you want a game to be more 'realistic'?? They are supposed to take you out of reality.  I guess I missed the news report about the Demonic General in the real world.
 
Third, pking isn't what the game is about.  This would be a great addition, and it doesn't eliminate pking... it just requires more cunning.  If you don't have the skill, then back off.

I think that there is a solution to this.  Just give the ppl who are 'new to t3h gam3', or just don't like Pk'ing an option not to be able to Pk...

Hows about this... You just make an account option to be blocked from being Pk'ed / Pk'ing...  This Game would meet everybody's needs.  Well, now you will say that ppl would be happy, and they'd stop complaineing.
 
(I know you are all looking for a 'compleate idea' so...)
 
I'm sure you're gonna say 'then I'll just put my clerics in one account, and my other crits in annother.'  Well, then new rule for the game.  You can only open one account at a time.  I think this would fix it.  Also, just incase you guys are gonna get a buddy to be off pk'ing, and you're on pk'ing then you two just walk around and heal the Pk'ers, while you can't get hit... well, ppl who have Pk'ing turned on, can't group with ppl who have Pk'ing turned off, and vice-versa.

And also, it still could be raped. The fact that you wouldnt get a skull icon would be corrupted as well. People would only kill those who have the skull icon, thus not getting one themselves.
 
I've taken a side, and I must say that i just generally disagree with this. It does not make sense, in my opinion. Things are fine the way they are. Dying sucks, but get over it.
 
People PK for different reasons, sometimes they have none.
 
I support the idea of the watchman. or Highway Guard. I think its better than adjusting the game to center around people who dont have the sense to run from other players if they dont want to die.

Okay now, I don't get this!  I have a 56k modem that I use.  It's F'ing slow, most of the times, the Pk'ers are invisable ontop of that, so don't give me all this BS again, I'm sick of all these lies about how ppl can just run away, or can just type: /who <Pk'ers name> to see if their a Pk'er or not... because they may be, but they may also kill Pk'ers and have a high Players Killed #.  Besides that, ppl don't want to be runing away from any other player that they see outta town.  What kind of a game would that be?  I don't see it being a very fun one...
