Title: offline area builder
Post by dognapot on 02/19/03 at 15:03:51
i've mentioned this before sometime ago and since then there's been an increasing amount of folks who feel ready to dabble in building areas.

the idea is to give players the ability to further spearhead thier own area building ambitions. players would be able to make thier own monsters and areas using commands identical or similar to those used by current area builders and then save the area in some sort of format compatable with the server and other editors so that finished areas can be tested by the community and input can be given by other players to help in revision.

seems like a decent idea but would we all be active enough to make it worthwhile? i think thats the main point of discussion.

I think there is one, though I never used it so one of the other staff will have to say for sure.  Also, the monster/item editor program is downloadable by anyone (ftp://jlh64.cjb.net/).  I'd say the biggest issue is having staff review the areas and make decisions on thier quality - adequate quality being something the staff can't even agree on...

There is a offline mapper. I use it, it can speed up making areas if you know how to use it. I give it to those who work with me for a long time on a area (and it's near complete) for them to make the area. I check it over and the area can be put in within a day if approved.

The reason it is not put on the public ftp, is because it's complex to use unless you have a staff crit on nightmist to work out all the stat numbers.
If i made it public, staff would be asked a lot to tell people what all the stats meant and how to use it.
The files it generates are also 30mb each (since it uses an x,y,z) room system as well as the room number system. (most of the file is blank, so zips nicely in the region of <100kb usually).
Staff could give it to other people if they so wished, but i personally will not accept maps from other people apart from the staff, and i will not provide support for it.

I had that offline dev tool on my computer, I tried looking for the link through a forum search but too many new topics and too much variety in the search words.

And I wouldn't be able to get the name of the tool untill I go back home next week to see my parents, I believe it started with a A and was 4 letters long, don't remember offhand.

In Game Development there is a link to a mapping program given by Pandilex, along with guidelines for building areas. Its not so much the area building as the area background that is necesary. Areas need descriptions and story, not just mapping. A map can easily be put together around a fixed story if needed.

the program posted by pandilex is not the same as the one i created for nightmist.

The maps are what make the area. All the rest is descriptions monsters and items.

Descriptions are what make the area ;)  A map can be done in 5 minutes.
