this particular forum uses a seperate file for every thread and member, and as a result, there are more than 30,000 files in the forum folder on the server which is just inefficient. whereas invision uses a mysql database which uses less than 50 files to store everything, and is also faster (being based on php rather than perl).
anyway, invision has an ability (i think) to pop up a window saying you have a new instant message, and i would expect that it can be told to play a sound at the same time (if not, i'll just add a reference to a wav file to the source file for the popup box).
