F.A.Q
« on: 09/11/03 at 20:09:37 »

Just posting the ingame F.A.Q here for noobs to find. Incase they dont find it in the game client.

The very first thing you’ll need to do now is make a character.

Nightmist allows a wide range of starting options, to help make your character unique.

To create a character, so you can enter the game, simply fill in all of the details.

Name - Choose a name for your character. This will be visible to all players

who are in the game, and allow people to identify you. It is preferable

to choose a name suitable for a role-playing environment.

Password - Your character belongs to you, and no one else. To keep your character

safe, choose a password, preferable with some upper and lower case letters, and numbers. You will need this password to connect to the game, so keep good care of it.

Confirm - To ensure you have typed your password in correctly, you are required

to re-type it into this box.

After completing these three steps, press ‘Next’.  Ensure you’re connected to the   internet, and wait a few seconds. If there is a problem with any of these details, for example, your name might already be taken by another player, then it will prompt you to make any necessary changes.

If everything goes as planned, the other options on the screen become available to you.

Choosing a race

In a fantasy setting, why have only humans? Various races have different advantages and disadvantages, and a brief description for each is found below.

Human

By far the most common of the races, humans are found everywhere. Their ability to learn a wide range of skills has stopped them from being restricted to any class. However, because of this, they are usually defined as the ‘average’ race - equally balanced in all ways.

Elf

Elves are by far the most in tune with nature. They are usually druids or rangers, and are excellent at such classes. Because of their defensive, protective nature, they cannot be thieves or paladins, but instead are masters in healing, sorcery, and nature.

Gnome

Not the hardiest of creatures, these fellows cannot be anything other than clerics, mages or thieves. Because of their size and speed, they make excellent thieves, but are also very proficient in the art of spellcasting.

Dwarf

Probably one of the toughest races, dwarves are suited to become fighters and clerics. However, they also take an interest to thievery, and are quite capable of withstanding the toughest of combats.

Halfling

Much shorter than even the gnomes, these dexterous people make excellent thieves. They can however be almost any class, limited only by their dislike of sorcery.

After you have chosen the one you like the sound of most, select it from the list.

Choosing a class

Rather then keep everyone the same, you can choose a ‘class’ for your character. The class you choose reflects the manner in which your character progresses through the game. Below is a list of classes, and a description for each.

Cleric

The cleric is a master of healing and protection.  They progress through the game using their knowledge of healing and protection, and hatred of evil to destroy foes while following the wishes of their deity. They are often sought in times of battle, because they make powerful allies.

Fighter

The fighter is a popular occupation in Nightmist. They are typical adventurers seeking fame, glory, and riches. Powerful in combat, they can use a multitude of weapons to vanquish monsters and adventurers alike.

Ranger

The ranger is a figure usually found in woodland and forest areas. Usually they are quite passive, seeking only to protect Mother Nature from evil. They are usually highly competent with bows, and are very capable of protecting themselves, and the wildlife around them.

Mage

The mage is a master of powerful magic. While being unable to cast healing spells, mages are capable of unleashing untold power upon their targets, as well as being able to cast various protective spells. Mages are usually very quiet and passive, although they sometimes join with other adventurers in search of wisdom and power.

Druid

Druids are similar to rangers, but prefer to use magical arts to protect the land. They are very competent spell casters, and trespassing on their land can be fatal. They are usually found around wildlife and areas of natural beauty.

Paladin

Paladins are probably the most feared of the fighting classes. Following only their deity, they seek to rid the lands of all evil. Masters of weaponry, and with an array of spells to back them up, they are excellent warriors. They will never commit any act of evil, and follow the instructions of their god to the last word.

Thief

The thief is a cunning and deceptive character. Thieves always stick to the shadows, and can move around silently. They can strike quickly and effectively from the shadows, and can steal gold from a person with considerable ease. Thieves are out there a-plenty. Keep hold of your money purse.

Choose your class from the list. Depending on your choice of race, some classes may be unavailable.

Rolling your stats

Every character in the game will have slightly different stats. These statistics reflect your characters strengths and/or weaknesses. It is always better to have high stats, but these aren’t always achievable. Each race has different maximums for each stats, and the meaning of the stats are listed below.

Strength

A reflection of your characters physical prowess. High strength means your character can do much more damage when using weapons.

Intelligence

A reflection of your characters knowledge and magic ability. High intelligence means your character is a much more able spell caster, and as a result is a more dangerous enemy.

Dexterity

A reflection of your characters reactions and speed. High dexterity means your character is nimble and quick, and can quickly dodge opponents in combat. Higher dexterity also helps thieves to disarm traps, and sneak quietly around.

Constitution

A reflection of your characters toughness and resilience to attacks. High constitution means your character can take more damage before death.

Wisdom

A reflection of your characters magical defence. High wisdom grants higher resistance to magical attacks.

Charisma

A reflection of your good looks, natural charm, nature and personality. High charisma can help you buy items from shops much more cheaply. It is also useful for rangers and druids, as it affects their ability to work with animals.

You may have to roll a number of times before you are satisfied with the statistics of your character. Once you are, choose a gender for your character, and an image from the right hand side. Finally, check you’re happy with your character, and press Finish.

With any luck, your character will be created, and you’ll be able to connect to the game.

Now you have created a character, or if you already have a pre-made character, you can log into the game.

Simply type your characters name into the box (Or if you have used it before on this machine, you can select it from the drop down box), type in your password into the password box, and press Log In. You must be connected to the Internet to log in. It is possible that there is an update to the game. If so, you will be presented with a dialog box, which allows you to update. Simply click download, and wait patiently while the software updates.

If everything has gone to plan, you’ll be in the game.

Now you’re in the game, you should see something like this:

First, we will look different sections of the game window. There are 7 main ones, and a description of each is listed below.

People/Objects Window

In this window, you will see a list of items, people, and monsters which are currently on the square, and an image for each one. If there are lots of things on the square, you may have to scroll up and down using the scrollbar.

Spells/Abilities Window

Depending on your choice of class, there may or may not be items in this box. In here is a list of all the magical spells or abilities you have learnt. To use any of them, simply left-click on one, and then click on a target in the People/Objects menu to use the spell or ability on. Some spells/abilities can only be cast on yourself, some only on monsters, and some on players.

Commands Window

Depending on a number of factors, there may be buttons in here. For example, if you’re in a tavern (as in the image above), you can choose various options such as look around.

Underneath these, are 5 command buttons.  You can select up to two of these at the same time, by clicking with either the left or right mouse. In the above image, the ‘sword’ icon is selected with one mouse button, and the ‘scroll and potion’ button is selected with another, as represented by the red and blue borders. When these are used, you must click the appropriate mouse button on the target - i.e. the one that corresponds to the selected button.

 Attack Mode
With this selected, clicking a target in the People/Objects window will cause you to attack them with your currently equipped weapon.

 Examine Mode
With this selected, clicking a target in the People/Objects  window, or in your inventory, will cause you to examine it in more detail.

 Pickup Mode
With this selected, anything you click in the People/Objects window will be picked up and placed into your inventory.

 Drop Mode
With this selected, anything you click in your Inventory window will be dropped on the floor.

 Use Mode
With this selected, clicking an item in your inventory will cause you to ‘use’ the item.

Inventory Window

Your inventory contains all the items you have picked up in your adventures.  By activating Examine Mode, or by hovering the mouse over an item, you can get a description of it. There are also two buttons, which let you move items to and from the Armor/Weapons window.

The buttons in the inventory window are:

 Equip Mode
By clicking on a weapon/armor while in this mode, you can transfer items from your inventory to the Armor/Weapons window.

 Unequip Mode

By clicking on a weapon/armor while in this mode, you can transfer items from your  Armor/Weapons window to your inventory.

Armor/Weapons Window

In this window, you have up to four items, a helmet, shield, sword and armor. Depending on your class, some of these you may never be able to have. By clicking on the two buttons to the left, in the Inventory window, you can ‘equip’ and ‘unequip’ items. By equipping an item , such as a sword, you are ‘wearing’ it. By equipping a weapon, this means you can attack with it, and by wearing armor your armor value will increase in the stats window.

Stats Window

In this section, you can see a list of attributes of your character. Most are self-explanatory, gold being the amount of gold you carry, experience being your experience points.  The bar underneath experience shows how far away from gaining a level you are, and when it turns red, it means you are ready to level up. Stamina shows how much stamina you have, performing actions reduces this. Hp is how many ‘hit points’ you have. When you take damage, it is taken away from your hit points. If your hit points fall below 1 then you die. Mana points is how much magic you have. Casting spells reduces this also. Resting will restore all three of these, although it is very slow.

Main Window

The most important of all the windows, this one displays everything your character sees in the game. Room descriptions, action descriptions, everything that affects your character appears here. It is beneath this that the commands bar lies. You use this to enter most of the commands which guide your character through the game. As you progress and become more experienced, you will find that some of the command buttons you use are too slow. There are many commands in the game which are shortcuts. There are a list of these in the appendix, but you can also see them from in the game by typing ‘help commands’.

Commands are vital to play, so I suggest you skip to the end and look through the Appendices before continuing.

Below is a simple guide to get you starting and playing Nightmist.  It assumes you have read the appendix section and are familiar with the commands. Remember, you can type help commands in game to bring up a window with all the commands in.

The first thing you’ve done is logged on. But where are you? If you read the main window, it should say something like this:

Welcome to Nightmist
Type /? to obtain a list of online sysops. Sysops are here to help!
To page a user or sysop, type /p <name of sysop> <message>.
You can get general help by typing "help" and pressing enter.

Visit the forum on www.nightmist.co.uk for the latest info on the game and new additions to the game!

Special Events! Every Friday at 10pm GMT, there will be a mosh. All players are invited! Prizes to be won!

There are 4 users online.
Boar's Tusk Inn:
You're in the Boar's Tusk Inn. The Boar's Tusk exits to Viper Street 'East'.

Any announcements or information you need to know will be put on the bottom of the text, like the Special Events announcement.

Beneath this, you have the number of users online, and finally a description of where your character is.

To begin with, you can either talk to people in the room (some might even be willing to help you) to give you a hand, or find your own way. You begin the game with a small amount of gold. If you explore the town (but don’t venture anywhere outside of it), you’ll be safe from people and monsters alike.  I recommend you find the shops first, and buy a weapon or armor to begin with.

Next, any remaining gold should be deposited in the nearest bank. This means its safe, and if you die, you will not lose it. After you have done this, you should explore the area. When you’re ready to train your character, and become more powerful, you can venture outside the city. You’ll be safe from being ‘pked’  (killed by other players) until you have gained a certain level, but monsters can still kill you.

After you have ventured out of the gates, try to find some denizens of the land, and attack them. If you seem to be losing, feel free to run away until your hit points are replenished, and come back. After your experience bar has gone red, you’ll be able to visit the training area, and advance a level. This makes you more powerful, and able to wield better weapons and use better armor.

This should get you started. Remember, if you have any queries, feel free to visit the Nightmist forum, which can be found at http://www.nightmist-online.co.uk/

Also, if you need help in game, type /? To bring up a list of staff who are online, and you can page them for assistance.

You can now press >> to continue on to the Appendices.
