whenever i try to log in lots of alts, the night mist windows go all glitchy, transparent and unusable, the white cloud icons in the task bar go black and eventually the computer crashes. it sometimes does it with 5 alts, very often with 6 and almost always with 7.. i use 2 computers, one w98 the other wME

Woot I can get 9 on and use them all I could proably do more if I turned on the other monitor but why bother traning 9 alts at once is hard enough WOOT

win95/98/ me can't really do more than 4 reliably.
winNT/2k/xp has no known limit.

nope, it's win98 made to look a bit more fancy.
win2k is winme with the nt4 kernal/backend

winme didn't last long, as it's crappy

How much ram do you have? 128mbs is a decent amount to run alot of clients, 512mbs would prolly be the best. But as JLH said, WinME sucks and wont allow too many clients beyond 4.

a nt based os isn't the best salution for every 1 due to the fact that the newer nt os's I.E. Xp requier more ram and don't run that well on platforunms that 98 and 95 can if you have a decnet machine then perhaps but I would be carfull and strongly not recomanding ME its bascily 98 thierd edition with some stuff thorwn in and had alot of problems if ur not runing the right stuff with it, of course u run into that problem with xp as well

128 mb won't get you far lol. 512 mb is a start. i upgraded lately to 1 gig of memory :D

not really lol jsut didn't like the way 512 mb handled my 3d studio max rendering and other stuff combined with nm lol :D

Its not so much a RAM issue, as it is a Operating System issue.

Realistically, XP was made to require less ram then 2k. And actually, ntfs systems run soooo much better than the old FAT systems. Needless to say, XP has so many bugs i've lost count. If you have 128mb ram, you can run any ntfs system.

My pc runs 1.5gb ram. Runs really nice...

well any how I run xp pro with a xp athlon XP1500+ and Nvidia Geforce 4 MX, with 480 DDR Ram you would think I would be able to get up to what issy old record of loged alts where but its not posable on my computer even with all this kick @$$ hardware

If i close absolutely everything, i can get 78 alts on...thats pushing it though, my computer starts going slow.

I got a cd key for windows xp, now I cant find a freaking file of windows xp on any warez site, and kazaa is blocked at school.  Anyone got any ideas? Besides buying it? lol

The nightmist server wins every time.

Mind you, my computer has 4 monitors connected, and I can use 3 of those to play neverwinter nights and some other games across all of them, which looks rather cool.

Upgrade to 2000 / XP only if you don't mind being unable to play some games. Quite a few older games do not function in windows 2000 / XP.

I was disappointed when i couldn't play alot of my MS-DOS based games. So, genius me tried partitioning my hard-drive and putting 98 on one side of the partition, make it a selective boot-up where i could chose which operating to boot off of. The only problem is, and i still have yet to find out why, the 98 partition was conflicting with XP. I don't know if it was a partition gone bad, or if it just wasn't meant to be to have 2 windows operating systems on the same hard-drive.

I can move with about 50 crits, but due to my Dial-up connection, i lag like a dog that just got an enima. I'm rather curious as to what it would be like on a T1 network (knowing that a T1 network will only download and upload at about 800K a second.)

what do you mean conflict? if it's on a seperate partition, the 98 shouldn't be able to see the 2k/xp (if done with ntfs), the 2k/xp would be able to see 98 tho.

It would give me weird errors resulting with MS-DOS trying to access the NTFS file system, and if i'd try to do things on XP, it'd give me errors with a FAT32 system. Like i said, it could have just been a bad partition. I was trying new partitioning tools, and i found one i thought was cool. Needless to say, it deleted the partitions just fine :D

well, if possible, format the drive by using the win2k/xp cd's installer, create it a partition for itself, then the remaining space give to another drive for 98 on, you shouldn't be getting partition errors. what was this partitioning tool you used?

i don't know of a limit

that system tho, dual 2600s, they use the 266mhz fsb, so why bother with pc3700 ram which is rated up to 466mhz when you can't use the speed increase it gives, and what ram is it, afaik, they don't make pc3700ram in 1gb sticks, and no way would they be ecc/registered which should be required for >2gb. what motherboard are you using too?

I'm using a Tyan S2468UGN and the ram is made by Enet ecc but hey everything runs smooth and stable

and that was a mistype I didn't catch it should be pc 2700

you have an excellent taste in server motherboards!, on board scsi, lan and vga, so a true server class board. mine doesn't have those, but then, i don't use scsi, i wanted an intel server network card and a dual monitor matrox gfx card. i went for the cheaper asus a7m266-d (full server spec on http://www.nightmist-online.co.uk/nmsite/server.txt if you are interested).

I have a....busted up old pc with AMD K6/2 450mhz, 64mb, about 4 gig hard drive, some lame old voodoo gfx card, running win98 with a 56k connection.

Guess what....4 alts maximum and it lags like a sheep /shrug

However on uni comps ive moved 21 crits around no problem, although i did cause the rest of my clan to lag out when i moved on their square  ;D

well i personaly wouldnt recomend using more than 8 crits on a 2k operating system couse of the runtime protocal isues will rise with the use of more than one crit

I hate my puter.. I can have say 8crits online, but then it just runs like crap.. AMD AthlonXP2000+, 256MB PC2700DDR RAM, Nvidia GeForce2MX200 64MB (yea yea i know lol), 128k ADSL(hate New Zealand connections :S) running XP Pro.. ive seen friends computer with about the same specs as mine (xept the crap video card) run more.. so i dunno whats wrong lol

I fished out an old copy of xp pro and installed it... no probs logging all my alts now :)

pc - 400mhz, 192 ram, 80gb hd, 8mb gfx card, winxp-pro with xp-home boot, 56k, decent sound system (proper amp and speakers, none of that 5.1 crap, tried it once, cant even hear one of those pos's at the end of the road never mind the estate :) ) but in need of new soundcard, cant remember name of mobo but im on my 4th psu now, burnt out the other 3  ::) :o
