Title: Zone Alarm
Post by Roc on 07/28/03 at 06:42:28

I just read a post under clan forum by Lady_Maha where she suggested using Zone Alarm. After I installed it and opened my browser to Nightmist it asked would I like to run Angel.exe and Dameon.exe. Are these programs needed for Nm?
Since I have the most recent version of Nightmist is there anything I shouldn`t try to stop?

First you should check if you have any programs by those names that you play on the internet. If this is not the case, I suggest to block them, but not to mark the "remember this answer" box. If any of your regular programs stop working, see if the files are connected to those and then allow them access, if not, block them from accessing the internet permanently (can be changed in your options later, in case you find out it's something you need).

Why doesn't ZA work for you? This is the first time I have seen someone who it "doesn't work for".

Hmmm... I don't remember that convo. Lich said it was him you talked to.

Weird thing is, I run win98 (yes, I know, it's ANCIENT), and it works fine for me. Does it let you install it and gives you trouble in the config, or do you have trouble with installing it completely?

OMG! i hated Zone Alarm. I totally suggest getting a different Firewall. When I tried to uninstall it (before reformatting my pc) it uninstalled, only to lock down my internet connection, which I couldn't figure out how to fix. I've read a lot about Zone Alarm and there are some major bugs with the freeware version from what I can tell..  :-X

I'm running Win98 so maybe there is a conflict between Windows98 and Zone Alarm. But from my own experience, I'd invest in purchasing a firewall or using a different one, not using ZA.. It works fairly well tho I guess. And those two files do sound like viruses, I'd check them out if I were you.  :-/

It may be 'ancient' but the older versions of Windows are the most stable, with 95 being the best I have used.

Actually ZoneAlarm was tested as one of the best firewalls available, the free version for sure. Other free firewalls have holes like swiss cheese, while ZA is fairly easy to handle and so far has not given me any trouble (been running it for 4 years now, of course I update it regularly).

I run it on windows 98 without problems, yet it may be your older version of win98 that causes it to malfunction.

Other firewalls I tried before ZA caused other programs on my computer to malfunction, ZA hasn't.

Well, it was one of the causes for me to reformat my PC, as even though I removed it, remnants plagued my pc. It was fine until I decided to remove it. Norton's Internet Security is decent if you want to pay for it.

Hmm, I don't run a firewall at home. I have ran ZA before though. It's all confusing to me anyways. I figure, if I get hacked.. then hooray for me. I have a POS computer anyways.. and maybe they'd help me out with getting a life.
