Title: More Efficient Roller
Post by Thenobleone on 10/28/03 at 12:15:46
Ok I was thinking about how crappy the current roller is becuase it take a good 4 + hours to get a good crit.  So I think the roller should be made like you roll the stats in D&D.

For those of you who are not familiar with D&D I will explain as I give how this can be done.

First when you click Roll it will roll 1 stat at a time.  It will roll a 4d6. (4 dice 6 sided)  The lowest number will be discarded and the rest added together.  Then the roller will ask if you want to keep the roll.  If yes it will be put in a box at the side of the roll screen for later use.  You will do this 6 times.  Then each race has bonuses and penalties for certain stats.  So out of all the number you just did you get to pic which number goes to which stat so you can benifit the class you want to choose.  Once you do that you pick your race and the stats automatically add the bonuses and penalties.  Then you pick your class.  And Boom you got a character.

This allows for better balanced play and more individuality in the characters and allows for much faster rolling time.

I.e you roll 6 stats they are 18 10 12 14 15 10
You want a fighter so you put the stats in like this
Str 18
intel 10
dex 14
con 15
wis 10
char 10

You choose to be a Dwarf so just say your stats become

20 10 15 17 10 9  This would be ideal for a fighter.  Not by the current system but by the new system. it is becuase instead of having Max stats you have a Stat Bonus.

errr... this cant be, cuz f.e a dwarf has a max of 21 str but a max of 17 char. Which makes this idea impossible.

Cuz if i role 21 15 17 21 19 13

str - 15
int - 21
dex - 19
con - 13
wis - 17
char - 21

and this cant be for a dwarf, if you get what i mean. Or you have to discard all maxstats.

Obviously the max stats would have to change...

Edit: Also, you don't just place your stats into the position you want them (like say you roll 15 14 13 12 11 10, you don't just have str: 15, int: 14 etc. You have to take 2 off to add one to another stat. At least thats what ya do in the version of D & D I play.

(that was directed at Outsiders post)

Wouldn't take that long, and it might improve the game.

Edit: also, JLH is actually here to code new stuff, stop with all the bs saying 'Ah, that would be a lot of coding for JLH!' Who cares? I expect he knew he'd have to keep improving stuff.

Dude, he won't just drop it, you have to change all the crits that are already there. And JLH is happy with the current system, im his spokesman so just stfu or ill make ya go bye bye  ;)

Stop trying to be funny.... You are a waste of space...

The roller is fine and actually JLH is quite busy, why change what is already good!?

I agree, this is a complicated system you worked up & it would involve changing the whole crit system, as well as the current crits in game just to make it balanced. I think the people who spent all those hours actually rolling perfect crits would be mighty erked if they had to give them up (I being one of them). Plus I think the current crit rolling system is balanced, it ensure that if you want a good crit, you gotta put in the efford of rolling.

Post by Jurian on 10/28/03 at 15:06:11
hmm on a side note here, do we actually want it to become easier to get perfect crits? i think it's fine the way it is. having all perfect crits run around is just lame lol :D

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Zaknafein on 10/28/03 at 16:07:48
Jurian - Did you actually read it? With this idea there wouldn't be any 'perfect' crits, as everyone can put up whatever stats they want. Sure, people would want rougly the same stats (like high str for a fighter, high int for a mage etc) but the actual stats would be different. Ah, just thought of something.. You don't want people to run around with the same stats? lmao, how many 18 x 21 18 18 x are there in the game? or 21 x 18 21 18 x? Everyone at the moment has almost the same stats, and the same equip. At least this idea would remove the first thing.

Deathwish - Erm, nice picture there, but its a pity nobody was actually trying to be funny, isn't it? ''Why change what his already good?'' To improve it.

jadedgothgirl - It isn't actually that complicated. You just roll 6 sets of random stats, then you keep the set you like the most. After that you then take off 2 points off one stat, to add another 1 point onto another. I admit that may not be the best explanation ever, but I don't really think its that hard to understand.

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller

yeah i guess so....but there has to be some way around it.  trust me, there is ALWAYS a way around things.

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller

Ok with this system first off there are no max stats.  Just Ideal stats. And you decided where your rolled numbers go to.  The only thing that is set for races is the race stat modifiers.  That way if you are a dwarf since the ideal class is a fighter he may have racial bonuses of +2 str, +1 dex, +2 con and -1 cha.  Yes I am aware that it will make some huge changes in the game as there will need to be modifications to the roller and the current crits and slight changes to dmg calculations.  But that is not a big thing.  As all the current crits will have the opertunity to reroll with the new system, and re level to get the proper HP without them lossing all there hard earned experience.

Lol. With any other system related to D&D , 50 rolls and you'll have a perfect crit or there-abouts.

I'm thinking of making the roller harder anyway, instead of maths questions I thought about adding some pot luck and sports questions.

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Thenobleone on 10/29/03 at 01:23:29
The purpose of this system Pandi was to balance the game becuase not everyone is a school skiper / dropout and has 4 - 5 hours to roll a crit.  The whole purpose is to make the game fair for everyone.  Not drive it into the dirt by screwing the game up even more.

I have to agree as little as I play as it is now with the 2 jobs I have to work plue all the web hosting I do I come on train every once in a great blue moon and just work on web the rest of the time I'm home so I can't spend 4 hours to roll a perf crit

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Deathwish on 10/29/03 at 03:24:30
It doesnt always take 4 hours to roll a perfect crit... I made one just as I entered the roller so it's possible.

And why do you people keep posting this thread is dead... It isn't going to happen....

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Decept on 10/29/03 at 03:26:02
I think the roller is fine the way it is but making it harder would be to much... and I haddn't realy payed attintion when the last post was just saw there was a new post read it and so on

Oh god please dont! I have a hard enough time rolling as it is! & I know nothing about sports (being a girl with a brain  :P )

The only reason they don't want this idea in is becuase they just want to drive the game farther up the devils ass.

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Snowy on 10/29/03 at 13:29:10
i think this idea is quite good as i m used to it and understand it fully cuz i play d & d, its really good and its kinda same chance to get a really good crit 5/6 stats in current and this diea roller, this is just its much easier to get pretty good stats 3/4 stat perf.

/t Thenobleone You're just unpleased becuase things aren't going your way... And you seem to suffer reading between the lines... And also if you think this game is "up the devils a$$" WHY the hell are you here?? Go post under the Leaving Forum and bog off

/t Snowy Hmm all games cant be the same.. Originality is the key..

why bother? the math thing is there for the soul purpose of stopping cheaters, not to make our rolling hours any god dam longer!

You really have no idea do you? Changing the roller to D & D will make every character more unique, as it gives you the chance to put up whatever stats you want, and take off whatever you want (up to a point obviously). Instead of having every dwarf with 21 x 18 21 18 x, you might actually get some different stats!

Then whats the point in different races?

Title: Re: More Efficient Roller
Post by Zaknafein on 10/29/03 at 17:04:20
Oh my god... I'm starting to remember why I gave up with this game. Now, different races have different starting stats, right? Elves aren't going to be as strong as Dwarfs, Dwarfs won't be as fast as halflings etc. Now, the starting stats for a dwarf might be:

Strength: 15
Int: 8
Con: 14
Dext: 10
Wis: 8
Char: 8

And the starting stats for a halfling might be:

Strength: 12
Int: 10
Con: 10
Dext: 15
Wis: 10
Char: 9

(I know these probably aren't balance, but there just examples)

Now, which race do you think would make the best thief? Or the best Fighter? Different races would be better at different classes, but that doesn't mean you can't have a halfling Fighter, it's up to what you want.
