Ok, have any of you guys acctually gone and put that armor formula through a calculator?

At level 12 they have 150 armor... But thats not even the worst part...

This formula gives them upwards of 400 armor with lvl 30...

Change that formula to a more... how should i say... Balanced equation?

I love monks with a passion, but you just cant make them that strong *Oh and btw, all those spells that add to damage really dont do much... unless its like + to the base damage or something.*

Kudos on the base damage formula though  :)

well i read the first post...and eh...eh i got a very "buddhis" feeling about it and i thought that do we get a pacifist soon.
monks are nonviolent ppl ...right...( note pacifism !! )  :P

Title: Re: a Class for MONKS!!!!
Post by Stotic on 07/12/03 at 20:33:56
I think the idea is not bad at all.  I believe that the hp should be equal to a mages and from what I believe monks don't have no spells.  Only abilities.  So MP wouldn't be needed.  There would just need to be new interesting abilities that affect people in revolutionary ways.  The whole 1-clicking system is tired out and I say that we stay away from that.   I'll go into different abilites soon.

Edit* I guess I see how MP can be brought into this and I suggest they get the lowest MP of all the classes.

Title: Re: a Class for MONKS!!!!
Post by sayadin on 07/13/03 at 01:02:27
yes i know... i made a mistake on the armor.. and i fixed it... instead of have 6 to each lvl... i did many calculations and came up with random #'s from 2-4..... each lvl that you gain... you will get 2-4 + to every total... instead of my original lvl+#+total... its should or will be 2-4+total.... so the highest armor will be 120 and the lowest armor will be 60... and i thought that should be fair.... i did thought of some ideas for the monks.......... and canceling some of them out.... there are 1-3 spell that the monk has that doesn't involve mp, but it involves stamina..... and i am still calculating so just give me a chance to finish it and post it up..... and your opinions will help out greatly.... ty for your time!

if you read about monk it will say that monks are mages who go to monasteries to study  ancient art, they do use spells but not like lightning, or beam.... they use heal....

Well I think that you should find something else besides heals and coverting.  You start giving this to every class then the classes most known for those causes would be useful.  Healing should be a reknown art for druids, pallies, and clerics.  Lets not toss such a generous spell out.  Same thing with your covert ability.
Possibly some stunning move that has a 50% chance of taking away an opponent's stamina?  Or another stunning move that confuses the enemy for 5 seconds and the enemy's attacks can go to any random person in the room.

By the way, even if this class doesn't get put in I congratulate you on being the only class suggester to have a thorough thought out plan.

Great idea, it is apparent you put alot of thought into the whole idea, and have created a semi-logical ability/spell list for monks.

Monks do have spells, but mainly just a healing spell and they heal very weakly.

Monks are a calm mallow class. Only using their abilities when needed.

It'd be cool if they could only attack if they were attacked first. But there would be problems with that if they got HP like a mage. *shrug*

Isaiah.

alright i did some more reading up on the monk class and well... ends up being that they have more hp than zerkers, less armor, and damage should be more... i've been thinking... that this class will be very powerful... so to make this class fairness... the hp will be like rangers, i brought down the armor, and the dmg is raised... slightly... i am going to quadruple check my work before i post the final class of the monk..... and i hope the staff will love it.... also the monks have no mp... so they will just have abilities..... and they must train to get the abilities... or you can do it however you want.... ty for your time!

Title: Re: a Class for MONKS!!!!

Erm, They should have plenty of skills that enhance dodging rate *Like the actual dodging formula is increased by 5% or something*

They should also have plenty of skills that cause the enemies hit rate to go down *The actual hit rate is taken down from anywhere from 5-20%*

They should also NOT have a large resevoir of health *As they are masters of the martial arts, and thier whole life is dedicated to mastering of DODGING most attacks*

They should be lightly to medium armored beings that have an amazing ability to dodge, and confuse the enemy. They should also be able to cause Small amounts of damage VERY quickly. *Not VERY small amounts of damage, but smaller than other classes by a margin, Compensate by giving an extra one or two stamina, that or gauntlets that increase attack*

Constructive critisism(Sp?) is all this is... thanks

~Bean~

i've already thought of bring down the enemies chance to hit and stotic propose to confused or stun the enemie to where he will attack anyone thats around them or lowers dex for several seconds...and the hp i already stated that too....their skin is their armor.... it increases in thickness per lvl.... the dmg it will do has been solve but has not been posted yet since i am still making sure that this will be a fair class and neither a advantage nor disadvantage..... and i am examining the gauntlet that i have thought of and give them their base dmgs and ect..... hopefully my next post will be my final cut.... and hopefully it will become a class of nightmist... but if you have ideas for some gauntlets plz send them to me... and i will try to re-arrange everything for it and you will get credit for having some thought about it.... you can contact me at sayadin or wicked_killa in-game or e-mail me at kamikazekarni@aol.com

Damage looks fine to me, armor is looking alright as well, but these abilities are just old skills with new names...

In place of your heal spell;
Meditate, 1 stamina,
Halves regeneration rate and "heals" X (don’t know, maybe 5hp?). Canceled if the Monk tries to make another action.

Also, MANY more enhancing spells. More speed, a spell that increases armor, and such.

HP on a monk isn’t high, Ranger is fine but what would make you think 'zerker (in reference to your previous post)? Just wondering about that...

i have a friend and he play dnd(dungeons and dragon) and i play too... he's always a monk and i am 80% of the time a monk as well.... he knows a lot more about monk than me and he memo me telling me that monk have more hp than zerkers.... so i told that would be godlike for this game and i am going to keep it as ranger for it will seem fair..... i don't understand what you mean by meditate.... but i get the cost to get it.... try to send me more of your thoughts..... so i can turn these old skills to new skills... ty :)

Monks don't have more hp than zerkers though.. I haven't played monks on D & D before, only mages and clerics, but on D & D based games (such as Baldur's Gate) Monks have had less hp than fighters and zerkers.

I'll suggest it again.  Monks should not heal or covert in any way in this game.

well guys... i finally got my brain to work again.... this is my first draft of the monks weapons and well i triple check it for dmg, stam, and armor....and i want you the people, to tell me if its too strong too weak or just plain silly.... i won't be offended and to the people who wants to check how much dmg this will do i will add the base damage table of the monk on here so you can calculate it... have fun with your opinions...

Base Damage: Stamina + 1-4 (# = randomly between 1-4)(@ = total)BD anywhere between 27-45

Stotic, that opinion is fine, and your opinion would obviously carry more weight then mine, yet that seems a little harsh and hastey. It isnt even a heal spell...Its just a method of healing faster than a normal player...

Alright, I have though long and hard (heh, sounds like something that would be said in a bad episode of "Beavus & Butthead"...) about some new monk skills, I am only listing one here as it is the only one I have...completed...

Quivering Palm (Hehe, original name eh?)
Stamina: 1
Level: 25
Deals half damage with a 50% chance to stun (empties stamina bar) target.
[May need % and damage tweaking...]

I find it hard to imagine, a bunch of monks running around with scant armour on, with huge metal clad **** off fists. Perhaps the weapon you are looking for are knuckle busters?

Let me modify your previous suggestions to show an example.

Leather Gauntlet = Knuckle Straps

Copper Gauntlet = Brass Knuckles

Iron Gauntlet = Iron Knuckles

Bronze Gauntlet = Bronze Knuckles

You can even carry it past these examples to items such as:

Studded Knuckles

Spiked Knuckles

Burning Knuckles

Freezing Knuckles

Howling Knuckles
--

The last three could be top level weapons all with the same level requirement, all with thier own varying base damage / abilities and effects upon opponent.

Oh and in rounding, Monks have been suggested before and didn't go in, so I doubt they stand much chance at this point in time with pacifists being put in and balanced.

P.S - EDIT
Thought I'd just clarify for those of you who don't understand the terms 'Brass Knuckles'. It is not the actual physical fist that is brass. One could compare them to the number zero.  0   Now tilt that digit onto it's side. The fingers slide through the center/opening of the metal device, which then sits over the knuckles of the user, and held in place by forming a fist. Naturally, they are designed to fit the human hand, and sit comfortably over the knuckles, and thus, their name. The items are designed to turn punches into bone crunching fatal blows.

I was referring to Sayadin's healing spells.  Also I request that it only empties half on the player's stamina.  I mean at costing 1 stamina, you could easily cast it 6 times per round to make sure they never get to attack meanwhile your alt or friend attacks him.  I would suggest it maybe costing 2 stamina (still half damage of one attack) to take away half of stamina.  This would still be a very valuable skill for monks.  Especially in parties.

As far as monks healing goes, I would limit them to only healing themselves, I don't think it would be wise to put in another class that can heal and fight, otherwise pushing the paladin further into the closet. If Monks were to heal themselves, the skill could be titled 'Chakra' (discovered this term on the net). Here is a description of the term as defined by dictionary.com:

'One of the seven centers of spiritual energy in the human body according to yoga philosophy'

I'd say that would give just enough justification to the Monks to be able to heal themselves, although I'm still a bit wishy washy about any healing at all.

Could we please wait until staff have the current tasks accomplished and then start thinking of new ones they can bust their ass on to make us happy?

If I had money I would donate, I promise.

Thank you for your time.

I agree with stotic... it should have 2 Stamina but 20% chance to stun.... and it should empty half the targets stam.
