Title: Purpose.
Post by Mip on 02/09/04 at 03:34:19
I'm probably going to be stoned for this so I will make it brief.

What was Nightmist's original purpose? I mean, what was going through your head when you decided to make Nightmist? Was it divine inspiration or the spawn of utter and complete boredom?

How many times did you get in a 'bind' while programming it? Not knowing how to do one thing.

How many times were you about to give up?

a few times, we've come across problems with working out the best way to do things, but we do work it out in the end.
if you mean nightmist as a whole, we have never wanted to give up with it, certain parts of nightmist that people thought we were going to add have not been added, but i wouldn't say that is "given up", more that we have better ways of doing it planned for the future.

Last question!

Is your coding well organized? or is it kinda cajumbled together?

I saw a 2000 line C++ program, and it was all unorganized. confused the hell out of me.

I'm going to sound really dumb for asking this but...err...here goes:

Is zMud some kind of programming shell?
...I always thought you and JLH programmed this game from scratch.

I'm betting they got the idea off Dungeons and Dragons :)
Because for some reason it's like a short and simplier version of the online game itself.
Pandilex prolly knows what I'm talkin' 'bout ;)

It is based on D&D, been said before.

And I think zMud is like RPG maker and such programs.

well, i think it's fine lol
i know most of the array numbers from memory and after almost 4 years of working on nightmist easily make edits.

nightmist was written from scratch in visual basic.
zmud is just something pandilex was playing around with at the time to see what it could do.

zMud is an interface, it's a game client that can connect to any zMud server. Unlike the nightmist client, which is tailored for its own server, zMud was a client that could connect to any of a huge database of Mud games. When I first saw the idea of entering into a fantasy world in text form, and the amount of detail some people had gone into to create such environments, I felt inspired to make my own version.

You've done well in creating nightmist with JLH, it's a great game.

There's no real gain in saying that it was done out of boredom...I mean, I wouldn't respect JLH and Pandilex any less if it was done as a school project, out of boredom or even with the use of a shell.

What it comes down to is that they created a game that has captivated 100s of people. Not many people can say that.

I have to give Pandilex and JLH props.

I'm attempting to build my own Partially Text based game, and am experiencing plenty of difficulties.

I had trouble programming a math tutor game that used all 4 operations (that you could choose from) and that let you choose the highest number an answer could be. o_o;;;

I'm using C++, so naturally the coding will be tons different.

If i were to ask you two questions, could you help me answer them?  :D

If you aren't a C++ pro I wouldn't start there. Seeing as it takes hella long to program in C++ and after programming for several hours the most you gonna get is 2 pixels and half a letter.

But with VB you can make a full working program in 2 min...

Uhm, i've made a Chess game, a AI for the Chess game and made a CD player with C++. I know my way around C++.

If it takes several hours for you to get '2 pixels and half a letter' then thats rather sad. ;)

hmm I dare say C++ is going to become the ASM of the new age...

I did that once... was an adventure game where you had to fight monsters to gain experience, and you could visit towns to gamble your gold or buy potions, magic and spellbooks...
