Not downloading key loggers, or re-using passwords from other games and programs which people might know.

For problems with keyloggers I find Zonealarm to be a very useful program.  Set it to ask whenever any program connects to the internet so you can tell it to never let certain programs(ie. keyloggers) connect to the internet.

I believe the web addy for the program is www.zonelabs.com

Just curious, what were some of the names of the characters?

So I know not to buy them :P

I change passwords from time to time. Have even went so far as to change accounts. Another thing is you might want to keep certain crits in seperate accounts. I have 7 NM Icons on my desktop. Each for a diffrent account. Never can be to safe.

Another idea that I've found useful for other games and could apply here... is to make sure your account name is not the same as any of your crit names, and don't give out the name of the actual account.

You can give us his name so we can string him up by his little balls and send amusing memo's ;D
