Why do you guys always have to act like that? If what he said is true, then it is not his fault he lost it all, so you people who just post in here to be ignorant need to grow the hell up.

You can't get hacked without doing something yourself, so yes it is his fault.

Outsider is right.. Hacking doesnt happen unless you let it... So it was his own fault

You don't download key-loggers, they associate them into programs. It's like chicken and fat. The fat might not be visible, but there's still lots of it. Pretty stupid example, but I'm glad you got banned, and if you got stolen from good for you.

Isn't chicken high protein with like more or less no fat?

Note i'm not talking kfc here  ;D

Obviously you have no idea what your talking about, if you have an internet connection and an ip address, then you can be hacked witout your knowledge.

To hack all you need to do is to be smart enough find or make security weakness's in computer system's or network's. You do not need to have the victum download any trogans, have an IP leaker or anything. You can get into anyones computer if your good enough.

Now I'm not gonna sit here and say that I am or ever will be smart enough, but for you to go and say that it is his fault, and call him a noob is outragious and compleatly moronic.

And then again, maybe it was something that he did, who knows, but what im saying is thousands of computers are hacked everyday, and the owner of said computers is not at fault.

Title: Re: Hacked ?
Post by JLH on 10/29/03 at 03:09:58
owner of said computer is always at fault for not keeping pc up to date and firewalled correctly.

Title: Re: Hacked ?
Post by Spongebob22 on 10/29/03 at 03:32:21
I would like to agree with you on that JLH, but even with todays technology, there are hackers out there who will blow by any firewall.

Although i do not believe anyone that smart plays NM.

:)

I don't agree with that, a firewalls purpose is to be given data from an outside source, check it, and if necessary forward it on to an internal pc (this is also what NAT routers do). If it were possible to bypass the firewall (which if correctly set up, should be impossible), you then get your connection into the pc network, you've then got to exploit a bug in windows (linux - that'll be the day) to get access to the underlying system. If your pc is properly secure, then this is impossible. All the big "hacks" we hear about on the news are pretty much all down to social engineering, ie, a person is involved, who screws up big time, and leaves a backdoor open. One of the more serious ones i read, was a "forgotten about" T1 line connecting some nuclear power station in the USA to some other place (i don't remember), and a virus got down the T1 line and into the private network (since the T1 line didn't go through the firewall system, as it was not known to exist), where it found unpatched windows systems and started to mess stuff about. i think it was the SQL Slammer worm, but i'm not totally sure, check www.cnn.com

Even though you almost always find a hacker that is smart enough to bypass even the highest security measures, it is doubtful that there is one of those playing NM.

Security features like virus scanners and firewalls are constantly updated (often thanks to "employed hackers" who try to find those holes and then report them), so keeping the most updated version of both should keep your computer reasonably safe, since there usually is nothing of interest to a hacker on a NM player's computer (yes people, your NM account isn't goal enough to attempt to bypass firewalls and virus scanners, so unless you run the NSA or DoD network on your comp, consider yourself safe).

As it seems all Rappy_Ninja got was a temporary account ban anyway, which he blames on another player's lie to staff. Which makes me wonder. From what I understand only Pandi and JLH can dish out more than daybans, and last time I checked, they check the logs before banning someone more than one day. So who is telling lies here?

Title: Re: Hacked ?
Post by Bean on 10/29/03 at 15:10:56
Lol, I know a good way to test your firewalls... go find a popular wargame eveyone plays... play it for about 2 months, and if you dont have any problems with your comp by that time well congradulations your secure!

Anywho, If you have updated firewalls *zonealarm, etc etc*
And an updated virus scan *norton, macfee(shudder), etc etc*

You should be fairly secure.... Although I like to password protect alot of my files with encrypted passwords... Just incase *not like it'd do anything besides slow em down if they DID get in*

:)

THIS kiddies, is why you cant 'hack' nightmist, like you so called computer 'experts' say you can.  the amount of times ive heard the words "well my brother can take down nightmist if he wants to, but he just doesnt want to coz he likes the game".  its crap.

Title: Re: Hacked ?
Post by Bean on 10/29/03 at 22:05:31
Dont mean to be rude, but a skilled hacker could take nightmist down if they felt the need...

nothing on the internet is 'invincible' or 'uncrackable'.....

But of course most skilled hackers dont spend their time near games like this they usually spend time expanding their knowledge of hacking...

so nightmist isnt in danger, but its not invincible either....

You mean just like you said to me at school when you went through your "hating nightmist" phase?  You were all like "I've been talking to these people who are gonna take down the nightmight server, its easy to do".  I was just like "Yeah..sure.." gotto tell you though, had a good laugh about that one with a few people hehe.

for a good account of the half life 2 leak, to sum up, it seemed to have been a microsoft outlook bug, that allowed someone by creating an email to abuse this bug, and to install key loggers on the network.

This is what you call a White Hat Hacker, a hacker who, upon discovering a vulnerability in a computer system, alerts the system vendor to the problem.

There are also black hat hackers who exploit system security breaches for nefarious ends, and gray hat hackers who supply information about a security issue both to the vendor and to crackers.

And Honestly, if NM is on a private server opperated by JLH, then no, you cant hack it, JLH is not that retarded to leave it open, the only thing I can see that would work, would be the same thing that happend to HL, and that is a major DOS. But that also would be hard to do from a single sorce. Maybe it could happen if a numerious amount of people "ping death" the nm server, but i see this as highly unlikely.

Title: Re: Hacked ?
Post by JLH on 10/30/03 at 02:46:47
a DOS attack on halflife was not thought to have been the cause the of the leak, the trojens downloaded via outlook seem to have been, based on what i've read.
a DOS attack using pings would be interesting, the thought of saturating 2mbit of bandwidth with pings is quite a thought in itself, but knowing my current hell with routers, it'd probs crash with 1 ping :( I've been eyeing up a nice cisco 1721 router should i not be able to get this one fixed (waiting for manufacturer to get back to me, they are supposedly looking into the problem), as i've never come across a cisco router that's ever gone wrong, and with a price tag of about $1500, i'd hope not!
