Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by JLH on 08/06/03 at 22:09:41 certain mail viruses are capable of reading the address book in outlook and emailing itself to everyone on the list saying it's someone else on the list, to raise the likely hood of the reciever running it (which it sounds like you might have done). Norton AntiVirus is recommended. |

When my virus-scan does that, it's normally because I have a virus. I use Mcaffe Virus-Scan. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Astrona on 08/06/03 at 22:15:18 It's not the Virus Scan that's doing that, He's trying to download the Virus program itself but it won't transfer onto the her computer past 40%. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Harky on 08/06/03 at 22:23:11 F-prot for dos is a free virus scanner. ftp.f-prot.com has the files you need, the program itself will come as something like fp-xxx.zip (where xxx=numbers), it will probably be in the pub/dos folder. The other files you need to get, which will be in the pub folder, are the files named 'fp-def.zip' and 'macrdef2.zip'. The latter two files are the ones containing the virus definitions, and are updated frequently so it's worth coming here every week or so and downloading them. edit: I just checked for you, download 'fp-314a.zip' in the ftp.f-prot.com/pub/dos folder. Extract this to the directory of your choice, then extract the files in the other two files I mentioned in there. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by James on 08/06/03 at 23:54:40 you where doing a online scan or where u downloading the hole probram? if that didn't work the next best thing is avg viruse scaner http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_avg_index.php its free and works better then norton and that other one I can't think of but its a major one... any ways avg found viruses that all the other ones can find, also if you find that u can't scan ur hard drive for viruses with the program that might mean if u have a virus that has a area to close viruse programs to stop u from checking, it has happend to me before so if that happens lets me know and I can walk u threw the steps to stop that from happing |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Lady_Maha on 08/07/03 at 16:41:23 It wouldn't surprise me if it was yet another keylogger. I recommend paying for the Norton Anti-Virus, it's worth it. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Artemis on 08/08/03 at 12:58:47 I also recieved an email from 'JLH' recently, same address as the one you got, but this one was labeled "All Rights Reserved" and had some odd file attachment, everytime i go to open it my computer locks. No, i haven't scanned it but I am running Norton Anti Virus latest addition with the latest virus definitions - although i have email protection turned off because it automaticly likes to quarentine any emails i recieve that have attachments and disables me being able to open them. I've scanned my comp for viruses since i've tried to open the file and found nothing. I haven't deleted it yet. Is this a real email or a fake also? If it's real, than my pc is probably freezing because of it's horrible low 64 ram. . .(hook me up J!) lol. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Pandilex on 08/08/03 at 15:15:08 NEVER run an executable attachment unless you are expecting a file from someone. Executable files end with: .exe .bat .com .pif .scr Ask yourself - why would someone send you an executable file? Check the e-mail content - usually it is nonsense. If in doubt, ask the person who sent you it what it is. |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by James on 08/08/03 at 15:45:30 not unless they have a exsintioni on them as far as I know any image file that has a .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, can not and even if some one did go threw the trouble to add them a virus can't run under those exsinton i.e. the .jpg and so on it has to be a windows exicutable things like exe and there are lots other .js is another one i belive and other sneeky things so the best think to do is if u are in the habbit of downloading alot of images make it so you can see the exsintions to your fies so you can see the "file~name.what~ever" and never open any thing that can run a comomand in windows I'm shure some 1 will be more then willing to put up a list for you |

not true, i personally know someone who can add line to jpgs to mess up computers, and usually they only come to about 250-300 extra bytes. some of the most notorious viruses can be small loop viruses, all you have to do, is hope the person tries to look at the jpg |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by James on 08/09/03 at 08:22:28 but how when u open up a file it has to exicute a comand line in windows, so how dose a jpg file exicute a comand line? |

Title: Re: E-mail from JLH... Post by Pandilex on 08/09/03 at 12:53:50 The stuff about jpg's containing viruses is nonsense - it is not possible for one to contain any malicious code. The reason why some people believe they may is that often senders of viruses try to fool people by calling files things such as: image.jpg .exe hoping they won't notice that the file actually contains tons of spaces with .exe on the end. Usually though, it's Image.jpg.exe |
