Title: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by alone on 05/16/03 at 17:27:40 This extra 1Mbit line.. Would it mean people who log on, would get a choice of which line to connect to? And it be the same game data base thingy.. Or would it mean it just puts people on alternate lines? Or am i completely off here?? Anyone care to explain to lil' ol' me? *flutters eyes* |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Omniscient on 05/16/03 at 17:34:37 Seems to me that it just means that the server will be able to handle a LOT more connections before it starts lagging. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by wonderful_nightmare on 05/16/03 at 17:45:52 seems to me the game will use two lines or jsut one new line to send/receive data. think jlh will take care of this :D don't think players need to do anything about it :D |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by dognapot on 05/16/03 at 19:33:57 seems to me that JLH is a fan of the 'more is better' philosophy. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by JLH on 05/17/03 at 05:33:32 well, if you want the technical info, here it is. the extra line is another cable modem with another connection to ntl, and it has its own extra network card in the server. This will give me an extra ip address giving me a total of 2. the dns names *.nightmist-online.co.uk (when line is installed) will use round-robin dns to alternate the incoming request between both ips, thus sharing the load evenly over the 2 lines. From a player point of view, you'll see no big difference apart from the alternate dns option will probably disappear. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by alone on 05/17/03 at 13:02:03 So, i was kinda right? It kinda places the info from people on alternate lines..? That's cool. Thanks for explaining that :) |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Pandilex on 05/18/03 at 10:46:43 It also costs a lot more $$$ ! So pay to play becomes an ever increasingly likely option. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Deval on 05/19/03 at 01:08:44 Mhmm, but do you believe enough players will stay to cover the expenses? |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Pandilex on 05/19/03 at 01:11:42 Doesn't really matter all that much. Any money is better than the current situation: no money. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Drac on 05/19/03 at 01:30:39 Hmm.. but consider the following: Are you interested in keeping a fast-growing, increasingly popular, a game that is perhaps one of the best MUDs out there?.. Is the prestige worth the money? Or are you willing to take a big risk with a likely outcome just to ease your wallets? I completely understand why p2p is seriously considered.. but what is more important? What if most players leave? It would then become less fun for the players that do stay.. and they would eventually leave as well.. then you'd not have a game at all.. therefore nobody to endure p2p. Can't get blood out of a turnip! On the other side of the spectrum.. perhaps p2p would be a success? That would be great, no? But think of the drastic decrease that would be put on NM's growth and popularity. People DO eventually get tired of playing.. some come back.. some dont.. NM would eventually dwindle.. having no noobies to replace the fallen. Yanno why? Bc new players are pushed away from a game that is p2p.. especially when they arent even sure if they will like it! Nearly every mud out there is free.. the new players would be more attracted to them, thus, in the long run.. killing Nightmist altogether.. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Pandilex on 05/19/03 at 03:25:22 You're missing one point. There won't be a nightmist if the bills aren't paid. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Kaiy on 05/19/03 at 04:37:04 Ever consider an interim solution? Several members of my family play, I have emailed JLH offering a donation. His response was that it wasn’t something they had got into yet, and weren’t sure of the best way to do it (bearing in mind I’d be sending money from the US). Establishing a way for those of us with means to send money may alleviate a pressing need to introduce P2P. Just a thought.. |

Title: Re: JLH's Downtime post.. Post by Drac on 05/20/03 at 10:27:40 Yes Pandi, like I said, I understand why p2p is considered. that there wouldn't be a Nightmist if bills don't get payed.. but will there really be a Nightmist if p2p IS implemented? There has to be an alternative option. ??? |
