Title: Do not accept files from strangers
Post by Stotic on 04/17/03 at 19:41:08
Do not accept .exe's from random people you do not know.  It enables the person to install applications on your own computer that could lead to possible "hacking" of your account or even worse scenario's in your own computer.

Not if the person coded the virus/trojan/keylogger themselves

Exactly, Which is why most virus scans except state of the art ones are mostly useless.

scanners can't detect everything, if you write the coding to the trojan/virus or whatever the scanner has no idea what it is and passes it off as just another random exe file.  i myself have trojans n stuff that can't be detected by any virus detecters simply because the scanners don't no its a virus.

go to start run type    msconfig

go to the startup tab have a look down through there usually if its something you have opened you will have that file there with that name like if someone sent you a pic with a duel extension   you might only see it as MyPic.jpg   with maybe some spaces after it but the can conceal a trojan buy naming the file this

MyPic.jpg               (spaces)                 .exe

making it a duel extension hiding the .exe part and only having you see the  .jpg   and your virus scanner might not recognise it as they have said before it can only detect what its been programmed to look for thats why always update and check for online updates for all avs and trojan scanning software on a regular basis      also down oad    TDS3

go to   http://www.download.com      and search for it the demo version will let you run for 30 days without buying but its better than any other scanning software and trojan software i have ever found  its not gonna detect virus so run it along with say Avg6    or norton 2003    or McAfee

but they should pic up anything if it is there

I suggest using http://housecall.trendmicro.com/  its free and gives u a solution to almost every virus. This is better than most virus scanners because it is updated daily and is more upto date than any scanner you can install into your computer. Any other questions, feel free to contact me in-game or ask here.

hmm don't you have those nifty virus scanners that test exe files and then looks at what data the file returns when it's ran?

not sure but i heard my friend talk about some of these a while ago :D

if this is true shouldn't they be able to detect any trojan since the idea of all trojans is the same?

if this is true does anyone know where to get one of these?

what you refer to is known as a bloodhound scanner part of a virus checker, they are not very reliable tho.

I'm a fan of Norton Internet Security 2003. I have it installed on my system. If any program (including internet explorer) attempts to access the internet it alerts me and I have the opportunity to decide if I want it allowed or not. I love using the trace feature. The only problem is that you can get a lot of false alarms. You can also set it to log everything that happens including all the web pages and all the alerts received. Can't forget the wonderful Popup stopper and ad remover that seems to work great so far.
