Title: Website Design Competition!
Post by Pandilex on 01/17/03 at 19:54:31
We think a website rennovation is long needed, and what better way to obtain a new one from the players themselves?

We're looking for one or more people to design a website for the game. It must contain all of the information and links that are on the current one with the exception of the story on the main page.

Every entry we judge to be of reasonable standard and effort will recieve a prize of 50-80k at the judges discretion.

If we find an entry we like enough to use, the winner will win a bracelet of speed.

Good luck!

~Pandilex

an extra requirement; any submitted entries must not use shareware code from websites such as dynamic drive, or any copyrighted code (including javascript).
we also reserve the right to edit/optimise the code in any way we see fit to make it run better cross-platform wise or to make the code smaller so it takes less time to load.

Are y'all stuck on that black/yellow color scheme, or is that up for change?

Any limits on languages/technologies used? Would you like us to stick to HTML/standard JS, or is SSI/ASP/PHP (just naming examples...) compatible with your server/host? It would be helpful to know what your system is capable of hosting.

Thanks :)

One more requriement:
Anyone who impliments any animated GIF bats into their coding will be automatically disqualified, blacklisted, and verbally lambasted by my non-staff forum account.

Is there a limit on the amount of entries you can enter? I know there are several different ideas and designs that I like, and I think being able to send n more than one design would be good so u have more variations :)

Also ... when will the contest be over?

how long we get to do it in then?

my pc could be set up to do others, but it shouldn't be necessary, the only dynamic content on nightmist is all the stats stuff of which most is created real time by the nightmist server itself on port 8080, whereas stats stuff on port 80 is created every minute by the stats engine.
you shouldn't need anything dynamic so therefore asp/php/perl is not required.
if you want to change the entire color scheme, and it's very good, i'll spend the time necessary to change all the stats stuff and forum to try and match.
flash movies are not allowed.
compatibility with ie6 is essential, if it doesn't work on microsoft's latest browser, your entry will be deleted. if it works on previous versions of ie, and/or netscape this will help your 'score'.
you can submit more than 1 entry, but if all you've done is changed the color, it will be frowned upon.

Post by Dan on 01/18/03 at 00:06:54
Ok, I would just like a tad more clarity please, being I just spent time making flash animation and now it is not allowed. (I detest wasting time)

You said that asp/php/Pearl is not required, but can we script it as such? or is there a specific language in which you would like this scripted?

I'm not sure what you mean, you should be able to just make a file called *.html, and that's it, the only others you may need are .js (for javascript, but i'll probs mix it in to the html source anyway) and .gif (256 colors) and .jpg (24bit color).
if you can't think of a way to do something in .html unless you do it in .asp/.php/.pl then tell me, and i will advise you on how it's done.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Dan on 01/18/03 at 00:35:57
I know the languages, but there are different types of scripting techniques. Such as an entire site can be done many ways wether it be HTML code, PHP code etc... (an example of the PHP I'm speaking of would be that of NukePHP)

I guess it would be easier to ask if there is a scripting code that is not allowed?

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by JLH on 01/18/03 at 00:44:34
i do not know php, nor is my pc set up to use it.
what i meant was, everything that is needed can be done in standard .html, if you want to script something inside your .html file, then that's fine, as long as it works on recent browsers and requires no additional server support. (for reference, i run microsoft win2k server, with internet information services (iis) 5).

also, any code compiled to a form i can't examine won't be allowed, so compiling your entire site to .exe won't be accepted for the safety of my pc. basically put, if i can't read/edit your source code, it won't be accepted.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Dan on 01/18/03 at 01:36:21
I fully understand the safety you are partaking in. Anyway I myself wouldn't be sending you anything more than a link to an already established page, as so you could simply view the product w/o taking time to open files or endanger your PC. Source coding is simple enough to obtain from the established page.

zip it all up, and email it to me JLH@nightmist-online.co.uk pandilex and i (and maybe others) will review them as and when we get time to do it.

Are Java Applets allowed?  (java is different from javascript)

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by JLH on 02/02/03 at 20:23:27
if you can justify it, and it works properly.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Pandilex on 02/02/03 at 22:53:05
Not overly keen however, since the latest IE does not include the ability to display java applets. Javascript/DHTML would be much better.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by SweUrk Rchirack Unicrown on 02/02/03 at 23:22:32
Alright, havent seen the use for java applets anyway.

Ugh this is hard,  I had this perfect website design earlier with javascript 'onmouseovers' that would look really cool, and when I preview it,  its all messed up!!!

I give up  :(.

Here a tip for you designers taht are designing.

In the <body> tag, go <body bgproperties = "fixed">
if you have a background image!

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!

which reminds me, it has to work in all resolutions, if people resize their browser, or use a different resolution to yours, then the site should still work. (at least 800x600 shouldn't cause a horizontal scroll bar to appear at the bottom).

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Callisto on 02/22/03 at 03:59:20
So images have to be my own original work, as well as any DHTML/javascript I use, correct? And I wanted to ask if graphics are a neccessity? I know too many would make the site load slower, but I would want to have at least one for the nightmist logo ofcourse, unless I don't have too, because being that i am not a boy genious I don't really know how to make them lol.

Another question I have is if the whole website has to be our work, i know there isn't any way to tell if another person helped me make the site, unless ofcourse I bragged about it. But wouldn't giving a bracelet of speed to someone who didn't send in something they created on their own be a little unfair?

To look at it another way, you gave nightmist a site, so nightmist gives you an item. Both are happy. Whether you actually earnt it is another matter entirely.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Callisto on 02/22/03 at 05:29:53
Okay so it wouldn't really matter I take it? Because in that case I can get help making a new nightmist logo.

also, i dont recommend using frames, some low res computers cant view frames properly.

Title: Re: Website Design Competition!
Post by Insomnia on 04/18/03 at 16:33:26
The current website (+ ALOT of other sites) are using frames right now, so I doubt it'd hurt anyone.

The first variation was the coolest (2nd one down) of a pair of very cool logos, but I fear they may be too similar to the current one.

P.S I am aware you modified the current one, so my comments extend 'past' that.

Post by Gautier on 04/26/03 at 21:27:10
Thanks guys.  Unfortunately the logos have been removed.  HOWEVER, im not being big headed, but im quite good at graphics design, and ill be more than willing to make logos for anybody, for free, asap.

I'm currently working on 2 different ones. One contains flash buttons (basic ones until I learn more) the other doesn't. Both have frames. Here is a link to one that I might submit that was actually used for a grade in one of my classes.
http://myweb.cableone.net/Wylowbeast/
The other one that I am working on, I have to wait for the first to be graded before I upload it unless I find a decent free site to place it on without ads.
Here is a banner that I made with Paintshop Pro 7
http://myweb.cableone.net/Wylowbeast/Nightmistbanner.gif

PS: Is it possible to see what others are doing as well? I'm just learning to make webpages so I might find some things I like in others.

Is there a deadline to this? Also, can we get some feedback as to what you think of our sites? I have not officially sent mine in as of yet because there are some modifications I will need to make on both of them.

:-[ for some reason I can't get any of the links to work on your site. I suppose if it opens another window could be why because of my ad blocker within Norton Internet Security 2003. I even tried to disable it and it still would not do any links.

Nevermind, I got it to work afterall :), I love the graphic at the top.

wonderful jess i love it :D

only thing is, is that the forums html tag should either have target=_blank at the end, or something to make it appear out of the main frame

Just a little tip to all those who are trying their best to create a site for NM; don't bother. Pandilex is supposed to look over and decide whether or not to use the designs that you send in, but he honestly won't give a flying **** about it. I've sent him 2 e-mails and 1 memo asking him to look over my site (because JLH told me to do so), but he gratefully ignored everything I've done to get in touch with him, so don't even bother making one.

Anyways, here's the site I submitted which obviously won't be used, if you're interested.

You seem to have trouble with this Deval, you should work on it a bit, because I don't think anyone else cares to read your derogatory comments.

I could probably work on another site, but frankly I don't have the time. Good luck to the rest of you though :)

Don't get your knickers in a knot, it wasn't meant as a derrogatory remark, I'm just saying it seems very feminine.

P.S Your just as blunt, if not moreso, as me.

Insomnias page is quite cool, it alleviates an almost cumbersome feel that the current page has, but perhaps its downfall is it doesn't fall far from the current tree? Something I noticed that I liked, perhaps I'm imagining it, but it feels... I guess the only work is 'quicker'. I don't really know how to describe it, but its 'quick' or 'smoother'. A job well done..

It is a little bit girly, with the different colour patterns surrounding the text, it just looks a little cheesy.

I just had a look at the forum bit aswell, I would hate to have to read the forum with it being that size. Takes far too long to scroll down.

I like Insomnias site though, it isn't really much different but it just looks a little less 'blocky'
