254 isnt too much. If mages armor spell was as good as it used to be, and if mages damage and effectiveness was improved I might agree. However, they're not, so I don't.

Humans and half-elfs are the only classes with 19 con that can be a mage. Humans get 19 int and 19 wis max. A mages main stats, having more hp would be a substitute for low int/wis.
