ok heres the deal. this game has too little substance. i love it for it's sociability but there needs to be more to the game. so here are a few ideas i thought could make NM life a lil more fun.
 
1. houses. ive explained thier abilities and purpose here: http://80.4.180.160/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=Suggestions2;action=displ ay;num=1025443390 but another purpose to this would be to have a mail box. you can recieve world (server) update info in your mail or recieve quest letters.... but you shouldnt need a house to recieve letters...
 
2. letters.. can be retrieved from a place like a bank or something or handed to you personally by NPC's or even found upon examining a seemingly ordinary room.
 
2. now that i mentioned quest letters let me explain it. quests will be ran entirely by NPC's. youll get the letter and the npc will explain his/her problem, maybe you have to slay thier arch-nemesis or retrieve a stolen item. anyways the letter will tell you to go somewhere; so when you go there AND you are carrying the letter the npc should be generated to elaborate on your task and your letter vanishes. then by examining the room you should recieve further instruction so that you can find the guy/item/area. the thing your questing for is only available to the person carrying the letter and should only be generated for the quester. the rewards of this should be porportionate to the difficulty/time expense of the quest.
 
3. guilds. right now thier only used for lvling up but i think they also could be used to find quests like with the tall thief in the thieves guild and the dragonseye gem. each different lvled guildbuilding should a porportionately difficult quest for those who can use the place to lvl. from time to time they should change also just to keep things interesting.
 
4. items. as rewards to some of these quests i think new items should be introduced. everyone wants something rare or special and it should be available to anyone. rare items dont need to be special or up your stats or decrease your stats. it could be a regular nonmagical sword for fighters thats same as a halberd damage-wise. all that would be special about is that hallys are pole-arms and cutlass' are swords. i think its a sign that the NM public is starved for special items when a "scarf" that does absolutely nothing can fetch an absurd amount of gold because there is only one of them.
 
almost forgot about books..
 
5. BOOKS they can add to rping and just be general fun in a game like this. im an idiot and sometimes want to write logs or ballads of my personal quests. things like that.  
 
6. objects. i know there arent even like half the graphics as necessary but we need more objects. mops, sp00ns, knives, pots, pans, paintings, jewels, candles, etc. i know i know.. they serve no purpose but it adds depth to have them available and i want beat the crap outta people with sp00ns alright?

I really like the book idea...  maybe you could buy a library for your clan house which would serve as a storage area for the books you have collected.

i think books were discussed a while back, and it's an easyish thing to add, but the players decided it was pointless, something about "if you wanted to note stuff down, do it in MS Word or something rather than carry a book around that takes up inventory space"

I would like to (can can easily) put in books (/read in a library or /library anywhere) but I'm not so tallented at writing up stories.  Any of you can send me *well written* material that is appropriate for the game I can easily add it in a few places.  If you can't write english however, don't waste my time as I'll just delete it.
 
If you want a writing project, a lengthy background legend/story for the Hydra is something I already plan to put in (but haven't written). Be sure to have visited the Hydra so some actual game material can be hinted at in the story (ie, torches, Baltor & Ariat, the Turtle, hatchlings, etc.).

I was thinking a book would be an item you would 'use' to 'open' the book in a window where you can turn pages etc. Some books would be readonly ones, ie, buyable at a library or found at areas. Others would be writeable, so you open it, and type more in, then save it.

Real books would be alright too - would the players keep them, or would they end up littering the streets?  Once you read what's there, you generally have no more use for the book.

admittedly /read and /library is easier to do.
you can make up /library for other things except items (so far the only other library entry is '/library jlh'), to add something to this, just memo me it and i'll add it to the file as there is no command way to do this yet.

They could have like hints about items and monsters and general game stuff... or new areas to explore and so on...

the books usefullness is only limited by the creativity of the players really, if it were implemented youd probably see me handing out horribly sarcastic n00b guides and making false exagerated reports of things that may not have happened. the whole idea of this thread was to give us all a lil more options here and there, books being one of them.

/read spell scroll name and some sort of short sum of the spell and you learn the spell instead of just eqp the spell and maybe even have to answer a question or something to be able to use it... I mean come a mage wouldn't just pick up a scroll and BHAM he knows how to cast the spell right? kind of a mood off topic point here but since we where on the subject of reading

I think books would rock. I could get a bunch of writeable books and write out books for a bunch of classes cause I have said the same things too many times I have helped alot of people and I have had to tell them all the same things. I have liked helping people but it gets old.

oooh oh oh oh oh oh. i would love to see books and journals entered into the game. i know when i first went to windia i wanted to sleep in the tavern and i wanted to read every book in the library, a little sad actually that i couldn't. And i wouldn't mind buying a bood at a supply shop and a pen to write down my journey, notes. whenever i open anything else with my nm windows open, it tends to freak out my computer and it shuts down unless its something like /web. laos, i love reading the stories behind things. Also, if houses do get made, i would love to have a library in there, or a study. then i can go, and read notes, or story lines. Smiley
 
Edit: also, it would be fun if you could go to like abook store, and buy books on history of nightmist, even if its old players journals, they dont have to go to waste. Say my fiance quits, and she kept a journal in the game, and before she left, she could if she wanted to donate it to the book shop, and anyone who wanted to could buy it for like 1000 gold. Then they could put it in there library, and this would be a 1 time buy book. but there would also be in stock and out of stock books, like maybe the backround to nightmist (whats on webpage) could be put in a book rather then site, and there could be 5 of the book in the store everyday, or every hour. I think this would be a really fun idea and i wouldn't mind making some stories for books if it was put into the game.
 
Also, it wouldn't even have to be stories, maybe some books could be a book of maps, or a book of poems, pre-written journals, blank journals, and information on monster/items.

This window idea would be good along with your map idea, Tender_Foot. Then you could have a window with a kind of medieval "parchment burned edges" map and not perfectly by squares. Then you could save it into a spot on your nm window and have a map of the sewers right next to your abilities or something similar.
